WP article: Animals & the 'Black Death'

This makes me sick and sad and angry; all the more so b/c I don't know of a single thing to do that will make it really any better...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/26/AR2010052602509.html?wpisrc=nl_headline

I can't leave my job to go volunteer for rescue efforts (& even then, I've read volunteers are being turned away if they're not affiliated with BP, which is f'd up)... other activism ideas? favorite agencies to donate to, at times like this? Anything I can think of to do just seems so pitifully useless... I really, really, really don't like my own species right now.  We sure know how to f*** stuff up, for other creatures.

:(

Oh, OK...now I get it. When I read "black death" I thought immediately of the bubonic plague.

Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket!

That's how WP framed it, in their tag...  it's kind of equivalent to the Plague, if you're a pelican...

Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket!

... and can someone help me boost all these other creatures out over the side?!

Utterly disgusting.  I can't read anything more about it because I get so depressed and/or full of rage.  The rage thing isn't entirely a bad thing, if only directing it at the people involved got me somewhere.  But I'm just a peon straddling the poverty line in a billionaire's world.  My voice doesn't matter.  The people responsible for this will get off, just as the heads of Bear Sterns, Lehman Brothers, etc. got off.  It is baffling to watch these disasters happen (happen? or be caused?) and NOTHING is learned from them.  NO serious and effective changes are put into place to prevent them from happening again.  Business (it's always for a f'ing dollar) as usual.

honestly every time i see that companies CEO (or whoever that company rep is) on TV I want to sock him... he's a fucking puppet and he tries to downplay the magnitude of everything...

Business (it's always for a f'ing dollar) as usual.

This is how I feel... Humans are greedy gluttonous creatures that will destroy everything in their quest for money and power... squeezing the last cent out of everything they can... This probably would've never happened if they just spent a few extra bucks on upkeep... fucktards

how ironic too for me... as an accountant i will be the same asshole... constantly analyzing how i can "cut costs"

Girl, I think if the day comes where you're in the position to make that type of accounting decision... Idk, I just have a REALLY hard time believing you're gonna say, hey boss, we could save a ton of money by risking covering millions of living things with oil, ruining vast fragile ecosystems, and sending several species to the brink of extinction! I don't think you'll ever be 'the same asshole' -- those are some pretty big assholes, & I just don't think you can get there from here...

I like your suggestion of socking them, tho; I'm a pacifist by nature... but... not an absolutist!

i guess i agree... in school they were teaching a "new perspective" in a management class i was in... i was taught that nowadays it is very important to analyze the environmental impact of your companies actions... that company that ruined the Gulf Coast will have to pay to clean it up and they ruined their companies brand name and image in the process...

it just irks me though... i am still training at my new job but they were already talking about how a main focus will be cutting costs... ya sure, ship production overseas and fire everyone that works here in the factory for a higher profit margin... duh... i really hope my ethics don't get tested

Thank you for putting words to my thoughts. I know I'm a child of the 60s conspiracy theories about The Man, but this was the first thing I thought.

I'm not a child of the 60's, but I'm very much into conspiracy theories.  However, I don't think they should be called that - the term carries a negative connotation.  Makes it seem like it is a ridiculous thought process.  When you look at this situation - it is hard to believe it is not deliberate - I just really have no thoughts on why.  Maybe, to justify high gas prices, show the world how much power they have...I would like to hear you theories on this one if you have any.

Well remember the price spike that they blamed on Katrina destroying the refineries, and then it was revealed that they had stocks of ready-to-go gas in storage, which made perfect sense given that it's a business, and they set their prices in advance? And hey, guess what--it was all price gouging. (See also the Emron scandal). Now we have this disaster, which it certainly is, but it doesn't seem they are doing too much about it...they don't even seem in a hurry (granted I live several thousand miles away and only know what I get on the Internet and news). But they seem to be going at it in a rather leisurely fashion. Dollars to donuts there's another price spike in our future. Spain will be quick to jump on the bandwagon and make up some reason that it affects us, too...about time the rest of Europe lowers prices due to their economic recovery.

They've been deceitful throughout this entire ordeal.  They've banned journalists and anyone not affiliated with BP from getting too close-- even those wanting to help in the recovery efforts.  And the government has done nothing to put pressure (or blame) on BP to fix this.  Probably because so many of them have been bought by the oil companies.  How do they sleep at night?

We (supposedly) have separation of church and state.  Why the hell don't we have a separation of corporation and state?

I'm such a socialist  ::)

Lately with some of my advanced students we've been studying a documentary on the crash of 1929, its causes and after-effects. Seems to me we're heading that way again...because the government(s) have been progressively dismantling the safety measures put in place after it, since about 1985, and handing unrestrained power back to big corporations. Yes, they've always had more than the general public realised, but the antitrust laws etc have gone quietly out the window or been circumvented by later legislation.
