More "designer pet" madness...

Ok, this is seriously insane....
I love cats, and for that reason I find this extremely offensive. This is as bad as the "designer dog" thing.
Not to mention the name! Ashera=fertility goddess. And they used this name because...? Oh, yeah, stupid yuppie cachet.
Great.....that is what the world really needs....a $22,000 cat! >:(
I have an idea....why not make it $44,000 and for every cat sold, with the additional $22,000 going to the homeless pets and the area shelters. I'll never understand why anyone would go out and buy a pet when so many are sitting in shelters waiting for a new home....before they are "put down" to make room for another facing the same fate. They just need to ban all breeding of domestic animals. Make a very heavy fine of $5000 per animal to the seller and the purchaser of any domestic pet bred for sale. Sad that there are some that breed "lives" for a living. Worse is that so many continue to contribute to the endless cycle of euthanasia of dogs and cats by continuing to buy them. :-\
I'm so tired of saving dogs and cats....I'll never stop or give up. Breeding, breeders, and those that support them by purchasing dogs and cats really just get to me. I wonder how many of them spend hours on the side of a road, or waiting in the woods for a starving animal to come to them. Paying thousands and thousands of dollars of their own money on vet bills and food every year. Nope...they just drive on by. Often thinking that the pet they have and purchased is better in some way. So far from the truth. It's the rescued ones that know and realize that you saved their lives, that thank you forever. Regardless if you find it starving on the side of a road, or free it from it's death sentence at the local pet prison....they really do give back more then they take.

Thank you Dave, you said what I meant but every time I tried I just started to gibber incoherently. When, WHEN will people realise that every time you adopt a stray dog or cat, you are getting a one-of-a-kind original that no one else will ever be able to imitate?? Much better than a pet that meets some imaginary "standard" and probably has bred-in weaknesses as a result. It's like people who refuse to adopt a child that is older than 9 weeks. If you really want to give a child a home, it's about finding someone to give your love to, not someone who meets your specifications!!

This is so true. I got Angel (my dog) at the shelter. She has given me so much more than I could ever give back to her--so much joy, love, loyalty, companionship, humor, happiness...
Breeders are criminals. Basically, to these people, animals are just merchandise, objects, used to make profits. But to "design" a cat, that's just downright sickening. I don't know who's more twisted and messed up, the person who designs the cat or the person who buys it for $22,000. Probably the breeder. But the buyer must be subhuman, too, I think.

Dave, you are so right. I swear our dog knew the fate that awaited him at the pound if we hadn't brought him home that day. He was around 8 months old, under weight, had worms but someone had taken the time to train him & they still gave him up. That way 9 years ago. :)
It's the way he looks at us & when he sits next to us, or on us (ugh, heavy dog) he can't get close enough. He remembers, I know he does.
I rescued my beloved Saul from a "cat lover" who had never bothered to feed him properly, on the belief that if you keep a cat hungry he'll hunt mice! He was so happy to come to our home, you wouldn't believe it. He was nearly 18 mos old and his testicles hadn't descended yet, that's how underfed he was. He hated strangers, especially kids, and a smoker couldn't get within yards of him. He would simply vanish like a ghost, which when he was weighing in at 25 lbs was a neat trick. (We should have called him Nero as in Nero Wolfe! ;)) He was a quiet, loving, purry lump and I miss him hideously. I tried to train him to go outside on a lead and he clung to the doormat, meowing pitifully, "Don't make me go out there! No, no!" So I gave it up. He was spoiled and spoiled me back! I miss His Royal Catness, that I do.
But no way in Hades would I consider ever Buying a cat! Especially not at those prices! There's something inherently *wrong* in crossing wildcats with domestics, surely? Especially just to get a new fashion accesory?? And how many generations does it take to breed the wildness out of them? We all know cats aren't fully domesticated as it is--they live with man because they choose to!
I might donate money to a shelter upon acquiring a cat from them, to help expenses. But if I had 22 grand, I wouldn't give it to some idiot who gives the words "fat cat" the evil connotations they have today.

I think it's just flat out wrong to allow things like this and I have no clue as to why it would be legal in the first place!

Personally, I think it boils down to the all mighty dollar as far as breeders are concerned and with the people, I think they just want to have something that their neighbors don't. It's a matter of selfishness and "bragging rights" and keeping up or surpassing the Jones'.
They'll get theirs someday!!!
