Hi guys,
I recently signed up for Netflix and it is cool. I would love some suggestions for documentaries...
Basically, I would love recommendations for anything veg or environment related. I really enjoyed the Electric Car documentary...so stuff like that. I don't like normal movies much but I am a sucker for investigative journalism/conspiracy theory, etc... I also like history stuff...like Walking with Dinos...yes, I am a geek...
Bring on your recommendations!
Enron, The Smartest Guys in the Room........all the juicy details of the Enron scandel
Manufactured Landscapes: Our crap shipped to industrial China.
Born Into Brothels: Teaching photography to the children of prostitutes in India.
Dark Days: A community of people living in an abandoned underground New York City railroad tunnel.
Night and Fog: Footage from Auschwitz, during occupation and after.
Life in the Undergrowth: A hella cool close-up look at insects.
Manufactured landscapes is awesome, beautifully shot! Night and Fog will leave you speechless. It's just about an hour long, but the impact will stay with you forever. I love documentaries, but I don't know of too many about the environment really.
My recommendations:
The Devil & Daniel Johnston: Talented musician loses his mind and makes incredible music through it all. Extremely interesting stuff.
The King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters: Doc about the fight for the top score in Donkey Kong. My favorite documentary of last year.
War/Dance: A dance competition takes place in Uganda and an underprivelaged school makes it. This follows their story with close looks at their daily lives and what they've been through in their war-torn area.
Life of Birds: This was actually a special on BBC, I believe. It's really long (3 discs) but is informative and beautiful. One of my favorite documentaries.
and then if you haven't seen them, check out Jesus Camp, Zoo, Baraka and Deliver us from Evil.
I love netflix!
oh and The Beauty Academy of Kabul is good, too. It's about a group that opens a beauty school in Afghanastan, right amidst one of the most explosive war cities. it follows the women and has interviews. Really heartwarming, girly stuff. I saw this when it was playing ona very short engagement in the indie theatre here and it brought tears to my eyes.
I just read where you wanted them to be environmental....the Enron doc isn't but still really good and mind blowing to know what they got away with for so long. You probably have already seen An Inconvenient Truth, but if not, it's great

I read that, too, and then promptly forgot it when putting together my list. Manufactured Landscapes and Life in the Undergrowth are both in that category. 2/5 for me.
the future of food.....scary stuff about gmo seeds, monsanto, etc....its sort of boring but educational
for fun we have been watching WEEDS instantly online. that is free if you haven't seen that you can do that. If it says watch now, you can watch it on line at no charge.
Awesome! These all sound great and I will prolly end up watching them all. I basically will watch anything documentary, don't know why, I guess I am just interested more in reality than fiction.
I know you all have different tastes so that's why I asked. I knew I would get a wide variety of recommendations...and I basically am interested in everything.
I already had the brothels one on my list...but I am scared. Stuff like that about kids will have me upset for days. Same for Auscwhitz....but the Beauty Academy of Kabul sounds very interesting. I saw Gender rebel awhile back due to KMK's recommendation. It was really good.
Thanks guys! keep em coming!
kind of embarrassing but one of my favorite documentaries is spellbound
Oh golly, Night and Fog...I remember my history teacher showed us that in my senior year and got major flak for it. I don't know why. It was 1979.

I only recently watched this (last year, I believe) and it killed me to see some of that footage. And the firsthand accounts of everything... lordy. You know it's bad because you've heard about it many times, but to have pictures of everything and stories, putting faces to the terror that happened; that's just frightening.
another great great doc(but also not environmental) is Stevie. It was made by steve James, the guy who made Hoop Dreams. In college(the same college I went to!) he was a big brother to a kid named Stevie. For the doc he goes back years later to see how he is doing. Stevie has been in and out of foster homes and has just been accused of molesting a relative. Its all about Stevie's life now but also about the guilt Steve James feels aboutnot keeping in touch and just kinda dropping him as soon as he graduated college. Painful at times but really good

I love Weeds. Definetly worth watching. Jesus Camp is interesting also.
