Hey vegweb, let's talk about classic cinema! (NVR)

When I was in high school, I got way into film as art and that hasn't changed at all. I've made it a goal of mine to watch all 100 of the AFI top 100 list and I've seen over 70 of them now.

My favorites:

Wizard of Oz (the best movie ever made. ever.)
sunset boulevard
North by Northwest
Citizen Kane
The Maltese Falcon
It's a wonderful Life

foreign classics:

The Bicycle Thief
400 Blows
Metropolis
Solaris
La Dolce Vita
8 1/2
Breathless

OMG, Free Willy! I saw that in the theater when I was little. The ending with Willy jumping over Jesse's hand into the ocean is one of the best. Great, now I've got that Michael Jackson song from the film stuck in my head, lol.

I love kiddie animal movies. My absolute favorite is Homeward Bound. If you want me to cry, just play the Homeward Bound theme, because I'll just see Shadow limping over the hill into Peter's arms and lose it. See, I liked it when movies allowed the  animals to live in movies. Now whenever they make animal movies I don't watch them because I know they'll die in the end, especially if it's a true story. I call those "Dogs in Peril" movies (they always seem to be about dogs) and I just can't watch.

Everytime I watch Free Willy, I stand at the end screaming Go Willy...Go Willy, you can do it with tears streaming down my face.

Funny about Homeward Bound.  It shows our age difference.  One of my favourite movies is The Incredible Journey.  Made in the 60's.  The animals didn't talk but the movie had a narrator.  I never saw Homeward Bound but it is based after The Incredible Journey and I think the old dog's name was Bodger.  I first saw it when I was about 5.  When Bodger came over the hill into the little boy's arms, I cried and cried.  I own the movie now and haven't watched it for awhile.  Maybe I need another 'happy' cry.

Old Yeller was a classic too but it was sad!

Meatballs with Bill Murray
What About Bob with Bill Murray
John Candy films: 'Summer Rental', 'Uncle Buck', 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' Cool Runnings.
Again, My Cousin Vinny.

Just thought of another great drama classic:  Billy Jack.

I still miss John Candy!  He made me laugh.  Although he lived in Los Angeles, he often came home to Ontario, Canada.  His home.  My sister and I went to Second City years ago where he actually started his career.  Who was in the audience?  John.  My sister and I went up to him and with our Second City flyer's and he autographed them for us.  He was so personable and truly was the wonderful man we saw on film.

Secondbase, did you ever see Summer Rental?  Equally as funny as Uncle Buck.  We lost a truly wonderful Canadian the day he died!

Yeah, summer rental is good fun.

The Shining needs to be mentioned in this thread, too.

LOL... I was an extra in The Great Outdoors.  I was the friend of the town girl love interest.  Even though I was on set for two weeks, the most you see of me in the final cut  is the back of my head in a pool table scene.  Okay, it isn't the finest movie out there, but it's my only John Candy trivia.

Favorite classics...
Duck Soup
Little Caesar
Dinner at Eight
My Man Godfrey
Key Largo
The Thin Man
Red Dust
Rain
The Third Man
His Girl Friday
Libeled Lady
Lifeboat
Barbary Coast
Baby Face
but I'll watch pretty much any pre-1950 film with Barbara Stanwyck, Marlene Dietrich, John Garfield, Walter Huston, Jean Harlow, Edward G.Robinson &/or Cary Grant -even the  terrible ones.  Most of my dogs are named after classic actors/actresses.  It's a sickness.

i agree.  i also saw that you mentioned dr. strangelove, which is one of my favourite movies ever.  kubrick was such a genius.  i love most of his work.

in terms of other directors:
hitchock (which was mentioned.  pretty much anything he did was brilliant.)
scorsese (taxi driver, raging bull, mean streets)
coen brothers (miller's crossing, barton fink, hudsucker proxy, oh brother... )
jim jarmush (stranger than paradise, down by law, night on earth, mystery train, dead man)
hal hartley (trust is another one of my faves.  poor adrianne shelly!)
tarrentino (reservoir dogs, pulp fiction.  not for everyone, but he gave film making a good kick in the pants when it needed it)
terry gilliam (brazil, 12 mokeys)
lars von trier (did anyone see "the kingdom"?  double wow.)
jeunet/ caro (delicatessen, city of lost children, amallie)

also liked the kieslowski "three colours" series, though i haven't seen any of his other work.

and yes, feelinsoreal, i did see swimming with sharks.  that was a cute movie.  the usual suspects and l.a. confidential were also great, to stay with the kevin spacey kick.

OMG, another classic...'The Birds' by Alfred Hitchcock.
And Jaws!

For those who liked The Shining, you should go see 1408, if you haven't already. Creepy as hell. I love Stephen King.

Carrie is another great movie. "They're all gonna laugh at you!"

Diver-Di, I highly recommend Homeward Bound if you're interested. IMO, the talking doesn't cheapen the movie. It's almost sweet to hear Shadow calling "Peter!" as Peter yells his name and they run towards each other. Shoot, now I'm gonna start crying.

I'll have to check out Incredible Journey sometime though. I love comparing remakes with originals.

Anyone looking to watch condensed versions of some of these films should definitely visit this site:

I've seen both Homeward Bound and the Incredible Journey, and I love both! It's been so long...

the part that made me cry in Homeward Bound was when Sassy went over the waterfall and I thought she'd died. I don't usually cry in movies, and didn't when I was younger, but that really made me cry. I thought the fluffy kitty was dead.

I think I need to watch that movie again.

have you seen the sequel where the animals go to san fransisco? ah, sequels...

Great thread! I have a degree in film- there's nothing I love more than a good classic. Savvyidler: His Girl Friday is one of my faves too. But, my favorite genres are fantasy, horror (mostly B), sci-fi, and anime and I usually like more modern stuff. Off the top of my head...

12 Monkeys (and La Jette, which it's based on) and Terry Gilliam films in general
Sleepaway Camp series
Evil Dead series
Metropolis (a nice choice by the OP)
Interview with a Vampire
anything by Wes Anderson (Rushmore is my favorite)
anything by Miyazaki (Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle)
anything by Hitchcock (Vertigo is my fav)
anything by Kurosawa (Rashomon, 7 Samurai)
anything by Truffaut (The 400 blows.. which we talked about in another thread)
A Clockwork Orange, anything Kubrick really
Trainspotting
Star Wars (I even like the new ones!)
<3 Tim Burton

It's always heartening to see film-literate folk.

I love movies, classics and not-so-classic. My genre of choice is horror... From the silent German gems, to the Universal Classics, to Val Lewton era B-Movies, Hammer goodness, Italian splatter-ers, cheesy 80's slashers....

I love it all. So here's some of my favorite classic horror flicks:

The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari
Dracula
Phantom Of The Opera
Suspiria
The Haunting (NOT the 90's remake!)
The Changeling
The Wicker Man (no... not the Nick Cage version)
Zombie
"Living Dead" trilogy (my home town is mentioned in the original!)

Oh, there are too many to mention. I also have a big soft spot for The Marx Brothers and cheesy Beach Party movies. As a matter of fact, I'm listening to Frankie & Annette sing right now.

And so end the ramblings of a cinematic schizo.

I avoided that one. Is it any good?

Babe is another classic animal flick. I saw it once when it was in theaters, but still remember the part where everyone watches in awe as Babe proudly leads the sheepdogs. Sniff! I also loved the cartoon version of Charlotte's Web from way back when. "The FAIR is a very big smorgasbord, morgasbord, something something..." (it's been awhile since I've watched that one)

Seeing as we're discussing movies, this video is perfect. I'm sure we've had similar conversations like this with fellow movie fans; I know I have (but not about The Godfather - I liked that movie. Now, It's a Wonderful Life, I've almost come to blows over):

as far as sequels go, yeah it is pretty good.

I'm hanging my head in shame right now, but I've never seen the godfather...

No worries, laurabs, I'd be in the same Godfather boat if I hadn't watched parts I and II for class. I'm always hesitant to watch classics because they get so many raves that I hate being disappointed (Pulp Fiction comes to mind). I'll see some classic movies I've missed eventually though.

I love Bergman! Wild Strawberries is my favorite of his.

I watched a bunch of Bergman's movies about five or six years ago and loved them. I want to watch them all over again. Wild Strawberries and The Seventh Seal were my favorites. I remember I also watched Cries and Whispers, Fanny and Alexander, and Persona.

I went through a film noir phase, too, where I would rent like five film noirs at a time.

The Godfather is always worth a watch (one of my favorite movies). The book was an excellent read, too. What happened to Al Pacino?! I think his role in The Godfather was his best. After that he gradually began to overact (was it all the drugs affecting him?).  And why does he always seem to be chewing gum (so annoying)?

CASABLANCA

that's my favourite movie of all time. I love alfred hitchcock thrillers and classic musicals (like easter parade, white christmas...)

Please - more movie titles! I love the classics!

I truly believe I am the only one in the world that hasn't seen Casablanca.  But then again, I just got my first cell phone about 3 weeks ago! :-)

RENT IT RENT IT RENT IT!

Casablanca is just so... indescribable. when bogie says the line "of all the gin joints in all the cities in all the world, and she walks into mine" - you can just feel his pain.
