Another weird PETA ad... (Kimora Lee Simmons)
So... I don't entirely know why I am posting this, but I know we've had discussions on here regarding the banned PETA ads (and PETA in general), so I wanted to share. :) Kimora Lee Simmons (ex-wife of Russell Simmons) is the latest celebrity (I use that term loosely... :P) to pose naked for PETA:
I don't have a problem with the nudity (and you can barely see anything), but what does piss me off entirely is that Kimora wears more fur than anyone I have ever seen in my entire life. I remember reading that she has literally millions of dollars worth of fur in her closet, and when Barbie made a "Kimora Lee Simmons Barbie" (insert 25 eye rolls here ::)), she insisted that it be wearing a "chinchilla" coat... >:( Why the fuck would PETA want someone like that to represent them & try to educate others about animal cruelty?! I guess any publicity is good publicity (is it?), but have some standards...
Plus, I bet you anything that she bought that dog from a pet store/puppy mill. :-\
That's gotta be like..the stupidest idea peta has ever had.

Yeah, chaining up your puppies is wrong BUT SO ARE RABBIT FUR LINED LEATHER GLOVES.
I was actually kind of surprised when I looked at her site to see that a lot of her fur is faux...it makes no sense that it's a $200 faux fur coat, but that was the case in the first few that I looked at the details of..but still, apparently she's not opposed to it.
Bad choice, PETA
I am glad you posted this because recently I was thinking of posting a thread about fur.
I have to say that I am really surprised by how much fur people are wearing these days. It's like all of a sudden it's back. A few years ago there were a bunch of anti-fur campaigns and I did notice a lot less fur-wearing. But I think everyone has forgotten and I've noticed a lot of younger women walking around in fur coats and accessories.
Maybe Stella McCartney got to Kimora and reformed her.
I have also noticed how much fur is being worn lately, jkl... I feel like for a long time it was almost a faux-pas to wear it & people who did were slightly looked down upon (for being selfish, for being cruel, for flaunting their wealth, whatever), but now it does seem to be back. Real fur trim on coats, gloves, hats, etc. is everywhere! :boooo: It's weird that it's now trendy again. Even my friends/family members who wear leather & eat meat think fur is just disgusting because it's so wasteful & frivolous... Blech!
That makes no sense whatsoever. I guess I can see the point that this is for an "unchain your dogs" campaign, but really? Kimora Lee Simmons? There isn't ANYBODY else who is a C list celebrity who could get behind this campaign? She is probably concerned that if her dogs are chained up, they will mark their coat, and it will be that much harder to turn them into a "snazzy" outfit once they are no longer cute and cuddly.
I bet Russel paid for her to be the "face' of something or would have to owe her even more alimony.
:P

 funny cuz it is probably true
I don't know why I was doing this, but I was reading wiki's list of notable vegans just now and Russell Simmons is on it. I so didn't know he was vegan...I wonder why Kimora was picked over Russell as being a face of PETA
Wow, this is utterly ridiculous, whats wrong with peta???? >:(

The fashion indrustry has actually been slowly inserted fur back into clothing lines for several years now. The idea is to place it in small places--as lining on coats, hats, gloves, etc--the purpose being that if people get comfortable with a little bit of fur, they will eventually be comfortable with more...it's pretty awful--if you watch the movie Witness (which is exceptional by the way) they cover this in detail--the way the fashion indrustry is brain washing the every day consumer. It crops up in really inexpenisve clothing too--so people don't bother to check the labels since they would never believe that real fur would be used on a low-cost item--the fur is coming from more then just trapped animals too--remember the big Macys cat and dog fur snaffu?
The whole thing makes me pretty sick--this is one of the big campaigns I hae been trying to implement on my campus--as far as the new spokes woman--I'm hoping that PETA has changed her mind about wearing fur and animals in general. :bunny:
Well, PETA also used Dita von Teese in one of its ads. That bitch also wears fur like it's goin' outta style. They do this all the time. PETA's hypocrisy is not news to me in the least bit.
PETA lost the plot several years ago, at least here in Europe...it seems to be a lot about political pressure group power and somehow you get the feeling (from their European ad campaigns anyway) that it's more of a political party than anything about the animals...and I always sense there's a lot--a LOT--of money involved for someone. And certainly not the animals.
It's sad that so many organisations start out with great principles and ideas and somehow over the years get sidetracked.

I forgot about that! Russell is really outspoken about his veganism, too, so I have no idea how he was married to Kimora DeVille for so long... Gross. >:(
:-\
This is frustrating. What a joke.

Ha. :smileteeth: Indeed.
You can vote for the worst dressed celebrity of 2007 on the PETA site. Oddly enough, after a paragraph explaining the cruelty and misguidedness of wearing fur, neither Kimora or Dita are listed as one of the people you can vote for. There in an "other" vote, where you can write in your choice. I voted for Kimora.

for anybody else who wants to vote.
^ Thanks! I added in (and voted for) Kimora, as well.
Yay Jessacita! What if Kimora won? Do you think PETA would change the results to someone else? I wonder how many people vote for these things? We should stage a coup.
i voted kimora too!
Real fur trim on coats, gloves, hats, etc. is everywhere
I usually assume most of the fur on sweatshirts, jackets and stuff like that is fake, just because it seems like it would be so much cheaper..
Is there an easy way to tell if its real or not?

Touch it. Feeling will tell you a lot if you've been around fur-bearing animals. Brush it the "wrong" way and look at the base. If it's pale grey/white...it's probably real bc the skin is "tanned".
There's quite a furore here in Europe because many "rabbit" skin trims on cheaper clothes are actually made of domestic cat skin...why cats are more worthy to live than rabbits I couldn't tell you. The treatment of cats that end up as skins is horrific but I bet they don't treat the other "fur animals" any better. You can tell which is which if you've ever spent any time with cats...the "nap" is different than rabbit fur. And a poor dye job in "fun colours" often equals cat fur, as rabbit is most often left in its natural colours. But that's neither here nor there. >:( It's still needless.
As far as "cheaper"--nothing cheaper than rounding up stray and feral cats, which abound in both Europe and China (and the US for that matter). They don't actually pay for the living animal, just a "finder's fee" and they do get paid for the fur. And I can no longer discuss this having shared a good quarter of my life with a cat.

I usually assume, too, but I always check, anyway. (Plus, I don't typically enjoy the look of even faux fur... But, the only warm vegan coat I could find this year had a faux fur trim around the hood.) ANYWAY!, I always read the label to see the materials. If it's real fur, it will say so (or SHOULD say so, at least); if the fur is fake, it will say "polyester trim" or something of that nature. If there is any question, I would never buy it.
