Right Wing Vegan?
???
Yeah, go figure...anyway, a good buddy of mine recommended this site after I told him that I really needed to change my eating habits...lifetime of fast food, about to turn 44, and I'm sure that the Haitian sewer system has cleaner pipes that I do (I'd like to buy a bowel please?). Although the idea of throwing my future colostomy bag at people who piss me off sounds pretty cool, I'd rather just throw a salad together instead.
I believe animals are here for the benefit of man, but at the same time, should not be abused (ex. Tyson employees throwing chickens at a wall...the same should happen to them!). And even though I like PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals), somethings gotta give...I just can't process all the fat anymore without getting the high-pitched sulfur burps (yuk!)
So here I am, a "Make Love AFTER War" sign in one hand, and a glass of soy milk in the other...again go figure.
Had to smile at that intro,
I started with Vegan-ism to lower my cholesterol and there is just no going back.
See you around :)
Song
haha. i enjoyed your intro as well. are you looking for any specific replacements for things?
Lol. I've been vegan for almost a decade now, but became vegan mostly for health reasons. You will find you aren't the only right winger on this site. We are just generally a quieter group. I mostly just come here for recipes and sometimes to talk to other people who eal with the same frustrations. Welcome to veganism. Don't let the hippies bite and scare you away.
hey i'm a hippie. we don't bite we sing love songs and wave peace signs.
No offense intended. I was trying to be funny in a way, but I don't know how many people stay away from anything vegan, because they are turned off to it by the extremists. That is what I meant. Really, the same thing can be said of any movement/group. I have no problem with hippies as people.
are you looking for any specific replacements for things?
Aside from replacing my keg with a six pack? Well, lets see...fer starters, I love me a good breakfast...used to do the McDonald's McGriddle thing for a long time, now I dig Multi-bran Cheerios with Silk and a nanner...lunch and supper is a bit tougher. If I could just stay away from red meat, I think that'd be a good start (I don't think meat is murder, but it's been murder on me lately)...of course, I'll be at my in-laws today for the Superbowl and they're having steak <sigh>....
I know that people have worked wonders with that little miracle, the soy bean...but lemmie ax u a kwerchun...is there any truth to the rumor that soy protein can somehow mimic estrogen, resulting in my gaining an extra cup size on my already glorious man boobs?
...and btw, thanks for all the welcomes...veggie/vegan-arianism is definitely out of my comfort zone, from both a political as well as dietary point of view, so I'll take all the warm fuzzies I can get (I'll store them next to my copies of the Limbaugh Letter). :-D
...and here's another btw @ hespedal, I like the idea of living off the grid too, but skip the dumpster diving...I've done it and its kinda stinky!
i would say that from my experience of all the vegan guys i've known that, no, it's not a problem. pretty sure the plant estrogens don't act the same as mammalian estrogens :)
my boyfriend said that there is a pretty good recipe for seitan in veganomicon that he used to make yummy philly cheese steak sandwiches with. I also just thought of the fact that i have been seeing "steak strips" sold around a lot of places.
there is an egg McVegan that you could try your hand at making a bunch of at once and freeze them for in the morning. you can also make great vegan pancakes and tofu scramble is great (seriously, many people are afraid of t but i have yet to encounter someone who doesn't like it). I love this recipe for pancakes. make them a bit healthier by using whole wheat pastry flour. it's also really good if you use half flat beer and half non-dairy milk.
it sounds like you like hearty stuff, maybe you could try some chili, just use beans instead of meat. i used to add yams to mine and a pinch of cocoa powder gives it a bit of a smokey flovour... many chili powders have cocoa powder added to them.
also you could make enchiladas? i always like mexican food for a hearty meal, perhaps these are amazing.
oh, when i started out i used to LOVE making tofurkey sandwiches for lunch. I would make them for vegan hating people and they thought they were awesome. just some toasted vegan bread (i liked the really healthy sprouted grain stuff), veganaise and mustard if you like it, tomato, lettuce, tofurkey smokey slices, and any other veggies you like.
another thing i would suggest that tastes very hearty and un-vegan to me is soy chorizo... if you can find the soyrizo brand it's really expensive, but if you have a trader joe's they have the same stuff packaged in a trader joe's label cheaper.
do you have access to any health food stores or anything? I realize i'm gvng you all this advice and i don't know what you have access to.
No offense intended. I was trying to be funny in a way, but I don't know how many people stay away from anything vegan, because they are turned off to it by the extremists. That is what I meant. Really, the same thing can be said of any movement/group. I have no problem with hippies as people.
lol i know. i was actually pretty much joking about being a hippie. i'm sure some people would consider me as such, but i'm definitely not.
...and here's another btw @ hespedal, I like the idea of living off the grid too, but skip the dumpster diving...I've done it and its kinda stinky!
yeah, i need to update that. i don't even want to be a dumpster diver anymore. mostly just because i want to eat a lot of fresh fruit and that would not allow me such an opportunity.
She said "mammalian"... :> ...what, plants don't have breastuses? And what the heck is seitan...<googling>oh, I get it</googling>. Guess that'd suck though if'n ya wanted to be gluten free, which also seems to be the all the rage lately.
Vegan pancakes? Veganaise? ...no eggs, right? Yeah, that'd lower the ol cholesterol too...and speaking of being couped up, when you take a chicken and put it in freakin' tiny box all its life, yer gonna get puny, stressed out tasting eggs...I've started to buy only free-range cackle fruit when I need it.
Living in San Antonio, you can't walk 10 feet without bumping into a Mexican restaurant...so yeah, I'm all about the TexMex goodies...I'll have to ask Casa Mia's on the Riverwalk if they have any cocoa infused concoctions.
No Trader Joe's here, but we do have a Sun Harvest...I can just imagine walking in there lookin' like a fish out of...wait, no fish either...dang! Might have to draw the line there as there's too many good omega what-nots in those scaly sons-o-fishes!
Well, I guess I'll go have me a glass of papaya juice, a sesame bar, all the while singing the song "Junk Food Junkie"...laterz ;)b
Might have to draw the line there as there's too many good omega what-nots in those scaly sons-o-fishes!
Yeah, if you're doing this for health reasons as opposed to ethical ones you might want to keep some fish in your diet.
Love your picture, by the way.

You ain't alone. I'm right wing AND gay AND vegan. UNICORN?

Or Pegasus?

Man, that unicorn is fucking gay. I think I'll go with pegasus
Hey CygnusX1!
Welcome!
Your subject line made me laugh too. We've got all kinds of vegans here, from living in communal housing and growing their own food kumbaya vegans to heart of the bible belt, junk food junkie vegans, and everything in between. I think you'll find we're all pretty wonderful. It's true, I can brag if it's true, right??
I wanted to add that I have a good ol' boy uncle who recently had to cut out tons of animal products from his diet because of a heart attack and he turned to his hippie vegan niece (me) and we've been working out some awesome eating plans for him, it's not all spinach juice! He has a lot of his old favorites, just with a few substitutions to make them vegan. Like using vegan cream cheese on his bagels (Tofutti brand is available at lots of large grocery stores or you can order it online) and vegan chicken nuggets (excellent recipes on vegweb), instead of mcdonald's.
ANYWAY, point is, you don't have to go the opposite end of the spectrum and just eat twigs, there is a happy medium and it is VERY DELICIOUS.
Good luck and keep us posted!!
Left wing vegan here. :)
Nice to meet you. Take it easy and go for a wide variety, eating lots of fruits and vegetables. Adding a nice big salad with dark leafy greens, and plenty of things like avacodo, carrots, red bell peppers, beets, on and on and on will do wonders for your health and well being as you make a transition.
As for omega 3's I eat vegan sources like walnuts, flax, hemp oil/milk and get every now and then take a vegan DHA supplement for good measure. Then again, I'm an ethical vegan.
It take a while to get to learn all the great vegan things out there. But if you're open minded, persistent and willing to learn and try new things it's an awesome way to eat and live.
Right wing, left wing... you have a sense of humor! And you're diggn' your veggies, so you are more than welcome.
The good news: Most beer is vegan!
The bad news: There is no such thing as good soy cheese. Chesse sauces? Sure! Cheese? No...
Well, so far you guys pretty much rock. So to continue the breeze shootin'...
Yeah, if you're doing this for health reasons as opposed to ethical ones you might want to keep some fish in your diet.
Love your picture, by the way.
Fish ethics...hmmm...I got a story for ya...1988, the family and moi goes fishin', dad pulls out a big ol' catfish, freakin' catfish starts going "aaarrrpppp arrrpp"...kinda hurt my feelers...didn't fish again for another 15 years...couldn't pass up a chance then to fish in the Gulf of Mexico for red snapper, but I got seasick and ralphed over the side, so then the poor fish wuz wearing my vomit hat! :-[ :D. I figure its just easier to visit my local fish monger if'n I wants dishes of fishes.
As far as the pic goes, that showed up on the web several years ago as an animated gif and I've been using it ever since. There's something about the combination of mad cats, AK-47s, and nuclear war that I find eerily fascinating. But back to our fish story...Hespedal, who I also find eerily fascinating, sez this:
fish isn't healthy! very common misconception. For one thing, the pollution in the oceans is rediculous and the fish get a bunch of that in their meat.
I'd think, without doing tons-o-research (aka talking out of my arse), that the pollution level in fish is no more than the pollution level of tap water...remember that story about all the leftover otc and prescription drugs that was found in yer everyday H2O? Anyway, that's what the liver is for, to filter out impurities...and with that in mind, my filter probably looks the same as my fish tank's...ewwww! :o
also, people often think: oh! i need to up my omega 3's.. because what we have is a ratio of 6:3 that's way to high, but the thing is, what we really need is LESS 6, not more three. our fat consumption is just too high.
What is this ratio in which you speakin' of? There's good fat, bad fat, Fat Tuesday, Minnesota Fats, Fats Domino, and roll me a fatty (sorry, couldn't resist).
make sure to ask if their tortillas have lard in them
But that's what makes it taste sooooo good....

...and also why my arteries look like pepperoni Combos!
You ain't alone. I'm right wing AND gay AND vegan. UNICORN?
Now there's something you don't see everyday...I knew you guys were out there, but never met one till now...love that unicorn comment. :> Reminds me of the time that I had a gay neighbor back in the 80's who once said of the more flamboyant/flaming types, "Ya know, its guys like that who give decent homosexuals a bad name." I didn't know whether to laugh, agree, or just keep my mouth shut!
We've got all kinds of vegans here, from living in communal housing and growing their own food kumbaya vegans to heart of the bible belt, junk food junkie vegans, and everything in between.
That's really cool...if you guys can put up with my Limbaugh/Beck/Savage listening/God, guts, and guns touting/America the beautiful singing self that is me, then I'm sure I can learn a thing 'er three from the commune, kumbaya hippie type folks out there and others. In the end, I'm kinda like the Bible that sez, "Let us reason together" ...or Rodney King who said "Why can't we all just get along?" ...or as Confucius say, ...ok, nevermind. ;D
Always open for discussions of any sort, but if anyone wants to flame me, lemmie know ahead of time so's I can bring the s'mores! Again, thanks for all of your warm welcomes as I try to go down this road to better living. :)
i feel ya on the burps! i haven't gotten those nasty burps since going vegan :) many people here have gone vegan for health reasons and not necessarily animal rights related reasons so you're not alone... be vegan for your health and you will feel fantastic in no time... seriously!
you should try vegan or at least vegetarian for a month and see how you feel... my boyfriend watched the Rave Diet video called "Eating" 3rd Edition (A MUST SEE!!!) and stopped eating meat... he feels fantastic! Just try it for a month and see how you feel... a month isn't that long right?
i feel ya on the burps!
Yeah, WTF (Whisky Tango Foxtrot) is up with that??? They're high pitched like I've been sucking on helium, and taste like I've been eating two day old egg salad sandwiches...seems like its the same way whenever I eat fried food too. My gall bladder is probably saying "Enough already, I'm dying down here!!!".
Just try it for a month and see how you feel... a month isn't that long right?
I'm deep in the heart (clap clap) of Texas, and beef is like around here...yet whenever I have an oh so delicious steak, it goes though me like greased lightning! What's yer opinion of the lighter meats, such as chicken and fish? And no I haven't forgotten what kind of forum I'm on either. ;D
