Vegetarian Items Found in the Grocery Store? Besides the Obvious...
I dont eat eggs or egg whites.
I dont like butter. : )
I have a difficult time in the store finding things i can have and its really frustrating.
Any recommendations?
Please note there is not a single health food store anywhere near me. And no vegetarian restaurants. We are not all so fortunate.
Ahh, i have another question. Are mono and diglycerides in bread vegetarian? I havent eaten any breads with it for a long time but im not certain as to whether or not i CAN.
Are you a new vegetarian? I hardly ever buy stuff that is “obviously vegan”. I mostly buy vegetables, grains, legumes, fruit, nuts, pasta etc.
You don’t need mock meats to survive. Most grocery stores (even the rural ones!) carry tofu (for meaty stuff) and soy milk (for b12).
As far as gylcerides go…they can be animal or plant derived. I’ve found that contacting producers is useless. They will usually go, “uhmmm…yeah, it’s plant derived” or say “we don’t know, we get our glycerides from several sources”. I think the purist vegan thing is ridiculous, so I eat mono and di-glycerides.

Mono and diglcerides can be animal or plant derived... Oroweat and Thomas's brands are from vegetable sources, sometimes it will say on the website... If you haven't seen PETA's list of foods you can find in any old grocery store here it is: I Can't Believe It's Vegan
Also what kind of foods exactly are you looking for? I work at a grocery store and have read probably every label so just ask and I can probably give some suggestions :)
Cool thanks both of you!
AmyMyLove, just about everything that isnt meat : )
Yogurt, ice cream, soup, breads, etc.
Note that im a strict vegetarian but not vegan! Well, to be honest it doenst matter if its vegan or vegetarian, but you dont have to exclude vegetarian items : )
Though, if you're vegan, i can understand why you would!
Ill take whatever you feel comfortable promoting. I wouldnt want to compromise your beliefs.
EDIT:
Thanks for the I cant believe its vegan URL! Useful.
Do you know if Tostitos salsa is vegetarian? I thought it was, but its not listed. And if its not vegan, im wondering why. It may not be vegetarian either. Do you know?
Why are there items on that accidentally vegan grocery list that contain honey?

Do you work at a vegan friendly grocery store? I just stalked your profile and noticed you are in the same zipcode as I am. Any local treasures to share?

They may have changed the product formula and the list does not reflect the changes.

That list is helpful, but not perfect. You still have to do your own research.

Your actually 1 digit off for the zip code... No I do not work at a vegan friendly grocery store... I work at Vons

Well vegetarian seems pretty obvious what you can and can't eat... easy peasy... i don't know how "strict" you are... Here are a few threads that talk about vegan products offered to give you some ideas:
Official Dairy Review
Official "Meat" and Prepackaged Food Review
I am also guessing tostitos salsa is vegan... they can't list EVERYTHING that would be crazy, many things are common sense but always read labels
also check out the 'new vegan finds' thread.. it has some random items that are surprisingly vegan on it.

I don't know if anyone answered this but honey is not considered vegan because it comes from bees. The vegan equivilant would be agave nectar. Honey is vegetarian though.
Addressing your other question...it depends what kind of grocery stores are by your house and what they tend to stock. The Kroger where I live has tofu, fake meat like fakin bakin, soy pudding, soy yogurt, frozen vegetarian entrees (like by Amy's Organics)....all kinds of stuff. If you don't have that kind of selection at your grocery store I'd stick with stuff like lentils, beans, vegetarian soups, dairy, cheese, pasta, rice... you get the idea.
yeah I am pretty sure that "I Can't Believe It's Vegan List" contains quite a few non-vegan items... I believe I read somewhere years ago that PETA believes that if there is one or two small non-vegan ingredients they still put it on there because they believe that every step towards cruelty free products counts or some crap like that.
ahh here it is, taken from the site:
"*Items listed may contain trace amounts of animal-derived ingredients. While PETA supports a strict adherence to veganism, we put the task of vigorously reducing animal suffering ahead of personal purity. Boycotting products that are 99.9 percent vegan sends the message to manufacturers that there is no market for this food, which ends up hurting more animals. For a more detailed explanation of PETA’s position, please visit http://www.caringconsumer.com/labels.html.
"
Lame. I don't know about you guys, but I don't make exceptions, if I am aware that it is an animal ingredient, I do not use it...
I personally wouldn't eat half (or more) of those foods anyway because most of them aren't even the slightest bit healthy for you... that entire list is almost all junk food... I know you can be vegan and not care about health, but bleh. not for me..
