vegans and eggs

i was wondering if vegans don't eat eggs because of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epGQyK0BJRc&NR=1
or is it simply because it comes from an animal?
i was wondering because we have 19 chickens at home who have plenty of room, fresh food and water etc. we don't let them free range, but we do have a large chicken run for them that is covered (we have predators in the area that would kill them).
both! factory farming and because you don't need animal products in your diet... animal products = cholesterol... our body produces enough cholesterol on its own... Why clog up your arteries? plus an egg is pretty nasty if you think about it IMO, even though it tastes good
that's why we have the chickens, because we like eggs, and because we wonted to teach our boys about where food comes from. and yo are right about cholesterol! we also wanted to teach the boys some responsibility as well.
There's at least one person here who, I think, would be vegan except for that she eats eggs from her own chickens. I can see where you're coming from. Vegans don't eat animal products. There are multiple reasons that people are vegan, so the reason that most resonates with each person may be different. If someone is vegan because of animal rights, they'll be bothered by the exploitation of chickens. Or for the environment, because of the impacts of concentrated animal operations. For health, because of the cholesterol. For most people, it's a combination of all three that resonates with them. You fit into the health goals category and would likely want to avoid them because of the cholesterol. There are lots of tasty things you can eat that don't contain eggs or cholesterol.
How do you treat your chickens? When they stop laying do you kill them, or do you let them live out their days until their natural death? You should just think about the chickens and whether they are really living a free, natural life or do you have them to serve your needs?
I know what you mean about this--I had many chickens growing up (they're still at my parents' house) and I loved them and cared for them like companions. I even have a chicken tattoo, so I can always have my babies with me. I would never hurt them. My parents choose to eat their eggs, but I do not. I do not really see anything wrong with eating their eggs, it's just that I find them repulsive now. And I think it leads to a slippery slope. If you're used to eating eggs (from your perfectly happy, healthy chickens) then will you be more inclined to eat eggs at a restaurant or someone else's house that doesn't have happy eggs from happy chickens? It's a mindset, and you have to have firm boundaries.
VeganRun, I always like your posts. You seem to say what I am thinking, but much more eloquently. :)

I could say the same thing to you! (Eloquently just means that I am ignoring my job and pouring my mind out all over VegWeb! :))
Good stuff everyone!
Personally, I gave up animal products 19 yrs. ago for animal rights reasons. However, I have also greatly enjoyed the health benefits of being vegan. I would never want to eat eggs or dairy just based on that alone, even if the eggs were produced more humanely than in a factory farm. It's just healthier to be vegan. :)
Well, I do use eggs from my neighbor's happy, healthy anti-coyote-fenced in 1 acre back yard chickens and guinea fowl. I also use cow's milk from the dairy across town, and honey from the fella up the street. And if I didn't like the conditions the animals lived in at any of those places, I wouldn't use the stuff!
The simple answer is. . .
If you eat eggs, you are not, by definition, a vegan. You could call yourself an ovo-vegetarian though.

Then technically you should call yourself a lacto-ovo vegetarian.

No, no, it's okay! I was just in reference to your profile (yes, I stalked your profile!). Don't feel like you can't contribute just because you're not vegan! You still have a good point, and I'm sure slowtrain appreciates the wide variety of views (well, the views aren't going to be THAT wide on this site, but you know what I mean).
