Vegan Cheese

I couldn't find an appropriate thread that's already been started.  (Although I did find a thread started by a "strict vegetarian" who ate dairy cheese and wanted to find some without rennet.  No one explained to her that strict vegetarians don't eat animal products.  Proof positive that we aren't veganistas.)

I want to review two cheeses that I recently bought.  They were $5 each at Whole Foods.

Soy Bleu

This stuff is as pungent as the dairy kind.  It stunk up my kitchen for half the day.  It tasted decently close to the original, from what I could remember of the original.

Soy Feta

Both cheeses crumbled, but the feta crumbled into smaller pieces.  I kind of remember what dairy feta tasted like, and I think this feta tastes less authentic than the bleu.  However, it was suitably pungent, too.

Both cheese tasted similar.  The major difference was that the feta had lemon juice in it, which, for me, was the major taste difference.  A serving is 1 ounce.  For reasons I don't understand, with both cheeses tasting the same, the bleu cheese has 25 calories a serving and the feta cheese has 40 calories a serving.  To me, that suggests a consistency or flavor difference that I missed detecting.  Maybe to other people, the two are more different than my pallet could detect.

I would love to find this feta. I haven't seen it at Whole Foods or the food co-op around here. My old favorite "cheese" was Vegan Gourmet Mozzarella but yesterday I finally invested in Soya Kaas cheddar and it was wonderful! Very cheddary and a perfect texture, my new fav. If only I could find a vegan gouda...

Soya Kaas is making vegan versions?  Interesting.

I've never seen Sheese.  When I go to a new market that looks hopeful I check on it, but I haven't found it yet.

Sheese is like $10 for a package and not very good, IMHO.

It was Veggie Kaas, same company I assumed. I think Whole Foods accidently ordered it because it's all gone now. ...le sigh

Ummmm, why are people so weirded out by soy/alternative cheeses? "They make cheese out of THAT?!" It's no weirder than making it out of milk intended only for the consumption of calves, right??

I'm so excited by vegan cheese technology. :D I remember back in the 90s when the only thing available to me was not-even-really-vegan-bc-of-casein TofuRella and RiceRella cheese. Ugh.
