Tempeh...cheese?

so I just bought tempeh for the first time a couple days ago. I have eaten it before but never cooked with it.
Tonight I made it in a stir fry with some tamari, and I've noticed that it has this sharp, almost cheesy flavour - maybe due to the sharp-ish tempeh taste + the salty tamari? has anyone else noticed it? I bet some awesome cheeze could be made with tempeh.
Funny you should mention that. The last few pieces of fakin bacon that I ate reminded me of blue cheese. I thought it may have been due to the fact that they'd probably been in the fridge a little longer than they should've been...
Well tempeh is made a bit like cheese, so I don't see why it wouldn't have a bit of that cheese like flavor. I've never really noticed it to be honest... o-o; I like to turn my tempeh into tacos or chili, so this might be why. What I do notice is a distinct nutty and chewy texture.
ive thought the same thing! - especially with homemade tempeh
That's a really good observation! I never thought of that. Maybe I'll crumble some onto my pizza next time.
Mine had also been in the fridge for a couple days after being opened - the black stuff was just starting to appear.
good idea, kmk! maybe i'll try it on pizza next time too. I bet if you marinated it in some sauce similar to homemade nooch cheeze sauce, like for mac n cheeze, it would be so tasty!
