suprisingly vegan (or not vegan) things

so, my sister just gave me a bunch of small stuff of hers b/c she's trying to clean out her house, and among them was this little heart tin of altoids with heart mints, so i was like how cute, yeah yeah i want it, and then later i looked at the ingredients, and they have gelatin in them :/
what are some things you have discovered to your surprise are vegan? orr not vegan?
smart balance spread, has vegan written all over it but contains lactic acid? Need to confirm... vegan or not?
smart balance light with flax IS in fact vegan. lactic acid can be plant derived. that's the kind i use because it's vegan, non hydrogenated, has omega-3s, and has half the calories of the other ones!
oreos weren't always vegan. they used to have... i think it was whey... when i first became vegan. for some reason they changed their recipe and now they are vegan. full of hydrogenated fats, though.
surprise! vegan:
oreos
nutter butter
various egg noodles
peanut chews
hard caramel
egg rolls
albertson's croissants
pork- and chicken-flavor thai instant ramen
Ok, so I immediately thought "nutter butter" was referring to Nabisco's Nutter Butters. But, I checked today & they have whey in them. So please anyone, what the heck is nutter butter if not this favorite cookie of my childhood.
Thanks!
maybe it's a regional thing? where are you? the ones i've had didn't have whey in them. they were the sandwhich cookies shaped like peanuts.
or maybe you picked up a different kind... like if they had different flavors or something. i don't think i've seen different flavors, but maybe there are?
Yeah, my Nutter Butters are vegan as well. Maybe it's kinda like Oreo's, where they occasionally have non vegan ones in some places.
The nutter butters I used to occasionally buy in MI were vegan.
My stepfather bought some Clif bars that were vegan... didn't try them though he's saving them for his 70-ish mile bike ride so I'm out of luck.
I am pretty sure that all Clif bars are vegan...same for the Luna bars and the Clif Z. They are really good and the company is amazing (from a CSR perspective)!
huh... they just never struck me as something that would be vegan. I'm definitely gonna try them though.
Anyone tried any of the Odwalla bars??? I know a few are vegan, haven't looked at all of them though. AWESOME!
actually all the clif bars are vegan except the Honey Graham Zbar and the Clif Mojo Honey Roasted Peanut bar... for obvious reasons. the lunas and odwallas are vegan too.

Maybe it is regional - I live in PA. They like to put animal products in everything around here! That's so lame though - why would they add whey to the cookies they sell in PA. I would not think it would make them taste any different. It's weird that a company would do that also, due to people with milk allergies. Anyway, I'll be checking the nutter butters next time I go out of town - just out of curiosity.
On another note, with all this talk about oreos I have to mention Whole Foods Brand imitation of Oreos. They are freaken awesome. Way better than I remember oreos tasting. They are vegan - at least the ones they sell here are. All you oreo lovers out there must try them!!!

this is true, and the builder bars are delicious.... BUT be careful in thinking all clif product are vegan because i saw this luna recovery shake thing with whey protein (this was when i thought all clif products were vegan) and then i started coming across the ones with honey... made me sad, but they are still good for biking when you need lots of cals packed into a small space.
most el cheapo cookies at any supermarket. vegan.
Cookies are the best. I remember being so psyched to figure out HEB's private label has a vegan version of thin mints, tagalongs, etc. Too bad it's such a small chain. Or, too good for those of us who need to eat fewer cookies.
My husband's friend told us Keebler Soft Batch cookies were vegan, and we believed him (he's vegan) and ate a bunch of them. Finally we read the label, and "natural dairy flavor" is listed - that was disappointing.
Gummy candy used to be my favorite, so it was great to realize *some* types of orange slices/fruit gems are vegan.
On the Doritos note, my husband always buys the fire roasted tomato Triscuits and calls them "doritos" because they taste pretty close to whatever was his favorite kind. They're not actually vegan enough for some people, though - they have "natural flavor."
In Dallas Airport, among all the steak and meat restaurants, there is a burrito place that has not one, but TWO burrito dishes labeled right on the menu as vegan. *passed out from excitement* :)>>>

those triscuits are amazing and super cheesy tasting!!

At DFW?! What's it called? My husband's flying out of there next week, and he will be so psyched!

Yay for him! Tell him to look for the Fuddruckers, it's right beside it. I got the roasted veggie burrito (labeled as vegan on the menu) with chips, salsa and guacamole and really enjoyed it! It is called 360 Gourmet Burritos.
doritos sweet chili flavor. only vegan one. my boyfriend gets really excited about it. i'm kinda meh. the only doritos i liked before going veg were the cool ranch (obviously i can't have em anymore) and these chili ones are kind of sweet, which seems weird to me. (duh, hence the 'sweet' chili label...but still.)

I'm with you. I loved cool ranch when I was a kid, it was my fav! I wish I could get excited about the Sweet Chili like others do.

I was only a fan of the plain cheese ones. My twin would eat the cool ranch....man, did they give you bad breath. I'd hate having her sit next to me after eating them. Yuck!

I used to love winning things in bags of chips, and under bottle caps. That was like what I lived for!!!

That's always a fun surprise to get. I've won 6 free pops so far this summer from A&W....I send the coupons to my twin to use...so far she hasn't redeemed any.
