Substitution for fish sauce?

I love Vietnamese rice noodle salads but at restaurants they always use fish sauce. Does anyone recommend something to substitute, I am planning on making it at home tonight. Thanks!
I think that you can buy a vegetarian fish sauce. If you can't find it, I'd probably substitute a little soy sauce with kelp powder mixed in. Oooh, or maybe just veg. worcestershire sauce?
Vegetarian oyster sauce maybe? They sell it at health food stores and Asian markets.
i think the veggie sauce is a mushroom based sauce. so if you cant find it, maybe add some potent dehydrated wild mushoom broth to tkitty's suggestion.
if you find it, could you post the brand? i was just looking for it myself, as i just read about it somewhere...
You can buy veggie oyster sauce, but not fish sauce. I recommend the book Real Vegetarian Thai. It has got great recipes and more to the point here she gives several different fish sauce substitutions (Its also an interesting read). I don't remember all of them and my copy is currently not accessible, but I remember black bean sauce thinned with veg stock being one of them.

Kelp flavored soup stock powder is closest one. I use the brand" Shimaya" brand vegetarian kelp flavored soup stock imported from Japan. I ask my local Asian market to find it for me. They did. If your market do not have it. They may willing to find it for you too.
Thank you guys!
I found this too :):
