Substitute for Nuoc Nam

I'm trying to find a substitute for fish sauce (Nuoc Nam) to make imperial rolls. I'm trying to find a vegetarian recipe, but the few that I found still had fish sauce in it (weird!).
Any tips?
Can you leave it out or maybe use a different kind of sauce? Hoisin sauce maybe? You could thin the hoisin with water.
They sell vegetarian "fish" sauce at some asian grocers. I would check there!
I thought about leaving it out, but I wasn't sure if that would change the taste. The hoisin sauce sounds good, actually. And I will certainly check the «vegetarian fish sauce» at our asian grocery store.

No actually. I found the recipe on this site from a Québec cuisine show. It wasn't a vegetarian recipe, but I traded the pork for tofu. And I used hoisin sauce instead of the nuoc nam. It was actually very good. I would do it again. I could write it up on this site. But since it's not really my recipe, can I still put it here?
This may sound weird, but a ponzu dipping sauce so that you have the shoyu saltiness mixed with the fragrant tartness of citrus might be just what the doctor ordered. It won't be identical, but hey.
There was a recipe for veg nuoc mam from Deborah madison's Veg cooking for Everyone that I thought made a nice sub. I will have to look it up, but it was something like garlic, chili, soy sauce, lime juice, mint, a bit of sugar... Did I miss anything? Fish sauce is presumably a little sweet, a little salty, and a little stinky, so I think this sauce hits all the right bases. I suppose if it were missing anything, it would need something a little more pungent, so maybe some fermented black bean paste?

the veggie fish sauce i always see is mushroom flavored.. its really good
