Soy Flour... Bleeeckh!

I heart all things soy so when I saw soy flour (Bob's Red Mill) I thought I'd try it out.

What is that horrible smell it has??? And the taste hurts my teeth... does that make sense to anyone?
And it's not cuz I'm preggers!
I had some cookies once before made with soy flour and they had the same feeling on my teeth... like metal clanking on my fillings.
Does anybody know what that is??
Yeah, it's pretty gross. Everything you've described is normal for soy flour! I can only bear to use it in small quantities for an egg replacer. I had a bag of it for a long time, eventually a moth got to it, and I haven't bothered replacing it.
It makes me shiver to think about it. (Seriously!)
I don't want to toss it.... I guess I'll use it as egg replacer as well.... until I can't stand it any longer. :)
But why does it make your teeth feel like that??
I have heard it goes rancid as well (although I wouldn't be able to tell with it having a weird smell and taste to begin with), so you might want to keep it in the fridge or freezer. I think 1 tablespoon mixed with 1 tablespoon of water is equal to 1 egg.

Yeah its pretty gross. I accidentally used it in a recipe cause it was unmarked and I thought it was barley flour-- I used a cup! Those cupcakes were barely edible, quite disgusting, actually.
I bought a bag of it months ago and I really don't know why I did at the time. There was no particular recipe I needed it for. I guess it must have been on sale...at this point, that's only reason I can guess for making the purchase.
To use it up I have been adding a few tablespoons at a time to any type of bread I bake. I really don't taste it by using a small amount and I guess I've used up about 2/3 of the bag so far. I guess it can't hurt. Not that it helps, maybe it just adds a tiny bit of protein to my breads. If you bake bread, just thrown in a little at a time, you really will not taste the difference and at least you won't have to "chuck it"! :P
