Is something wrong with this?

My mother and I are in a heated discussion about my food pantry.
Be honest...is there something wrong with this?

She says 'hippie' like it's a bad thing.

This could be a snapshot of my pantry.  Except we like to paint the jars and display some of them on the counters.  We use craft paint that will wash off when we decide to use the jar for something else and give it a good cleaning, that way we can repaint easily if we change the decor or something.

we have so many glass jars of bulk stuff, it takes up our whole cupboard, I like to call it the glass menagerie.

I don't think a lot of hippies drink Gatorade!

True story.  ha.  I know this "hippie" family in town, they own the local head shop and buy their groceries at the hfs where I used to work.  So one day I overheard a conversation between the mother and the 6 year old son.  Here's how it went...

Kid:  Mom, we need to get some gatorade.
Mom:  No, I don't think so.  We don't drink gatorade.
Kid: (in kid whiny voice) But mom!  It has electric lights!
Mom: (laughs and says) Yes, but it also has artificial flavors and colors and those are gross.

Hehe.  Obviously the kid meant "electrolytes."

Bovina, I think your pantry looks awesome.  I save any plastic or glass jar that I think I can use again.

Of course there's something wrong with your pantry - there's not enough disposable containers with brand names and advertisements on them! What's wrong with you??

I haven't quite reached this level of veganness; if I'm buying bulk I usually just use the plastic bags at the HFS and leave them like that (well, piled in gasket containers; I had some glass jars, but bugs got in them anyway! even the mason jars.). Some of my "bulk" items just come in huge bags to begin with (e.g., rice). But, I usually get my spices in bulk and have jars for all of them - some reused, some purchased new. ... like, 45 containers total o_O

I'm sure you've probably read this other places, but putting a couple dried bay leaves in with your bulk stuff can help keep buggers out.

The bugs don't get into the jars. They come with the bulk goods in egg form and develop in the jars. Keeping your stuff in glass jars keeps them from spreading from one contaminated product to another uncontaminated one.

It just happens. Just like using cardboard boxes from supermarkets can bring roaches into your home...they come from the supermarket's warehouse or back room.Or buying secondhand books can lead to silverfish.

well, last summer we had some cigarette/drugstore beetles who proceeded to get into practically everything we had : ( I know the bugs don't originally come out of thin air, but at least the containers I had didn't stop them from spreading. Hopefully when I moved I didn't bring anything contaminated... but we'll see.

*looks at her random collection of thrifted canning jars, peanut butter jars and other random glass containers*  ;D
No, babe, there's nothing wrong with that.
