Sherry Substitute

Hey guys, I am making this Black bean and pumpkin soup http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=34939.0 but I have never cooked with sherry or sherry vinegar, so I don't have any here. Does anyone know what I could use as a substitute?
I mean sherry is sherry, so nothing is going to be exactly the same. Sherry and shallots go together amazingly well. If you have any white wine that would be your best bet IMO. Good luck, that recipe sounds great!
In a pinch you can sub ginger ale, or plain white wine. Some people say apple juice. I would disagree unless it's a sweet sherry.
