sausage nightmares
this has happened a few times... and it doesn't REALLY freak me out, but i think it's wierd. sometimes i will have a dream and i will be eating something, and after i've eaten a bunch of it i will realize that it has meat in it (always cut up sausage), and then i will freak out, and wake up kicking and sweating nightmare style.
Also, i recently had a vegan first for myself! i had the food network on for background whil ei was cleaning my room, and i had to turn it off. they were making duck, and the guy (from food 911) was poking the duck carcass with a fork, and while i was watching it i could practically feel the fork in my back, it was so horrific.
when i first stopped eating meat, i could care less about animal rights, i think this forum has really opened my eyes to a lot of vegan issues that i wasn't previously familiar with, and i think it's pretty cool!
so how do i stop having nightmares about sausage!?
ha ha. i don't know how you stop, but i have had dreams about eating non-vegan foods as well...
what has become of us?
That's a terrible way to wake up! I'm sorry. I can't help with the dreams, other than asking if you have a big snack or meal right before bed. That can mess with your dreams.
I know what you mean about the FN. I used to watch it all the time, to the point that my family made fun of me and my kids were always using various phrases that the hosts always use, like "BAM!" (that annoyed me, glad they're over that) and "Yumm-o" (blech.) I almost never have it on now, 'cept for Alton (I have an inner nerd crush on him, so what?) because of all the meat and fois-gras this and gruyere that. It's disgusting.
I only occassionally remember my dreams, but they usually have to to with my being in a museum and going Indiana Jones on a display dinosaur that has come to life, or something like that.
I also became more interested in animal rights after going this site. Before that it was a theoretical issue that animal abuse was sad, but I really wasn't as disgusted with it like I am now. I refer to it as DARI (Dave's Animal Rights Influence).
I am so in love with alton it's disgusting.
and for now i'm pretty happy with a little DARI

Haha!! Yep, I think that's it!
As for remembering dreams... I co-sleep with my 4 and a half month old son. I never sleep long enough in one stretch to dream.
My friend the psychologist would probably say that sausages are a symbol...now, cut-up sausages...hmmm...issues with your SO maybe? :D
Just teasing. Really I think you're processing the whole vegan switchover, and as many have mentioned, they're always finding "hidden" meat in foods that others have prepared (family OR restaurant meals!) and being upset that they were tricked or lied to. Not to mention the label-reading required, which is in itself a nightmare of Dantesque proportions! So I think this dream is your anxiety about wanting to be a "good" vegan expressing itself.
And maybe your Id is missing some of the flavours associated with sausage, since it's always sausage in the dream. Try to find some soysage or something, or make some seitan with the classic sausage flavouring--garlic, sage, bayleaf, black and red pepper.

HAHAHA. you don't even want to know what those dreams are like.
Oh Lime, let me tell you about dreams . . .
I was almost 30 when I married. I was not promiscuous when I was single, but I was no virgin either. Shortly after I got married I started having these dreams where I had just had sex with some man. Said man was never in the dream & the dream started after the sex act had already occured, but it would suddenly occur to me, "Holy crap!! I'm a married woman & I just slept with someone who is not my husband!"
I've wondered where those dreams came from. They lasted about 6 months & then just disappeared.
I'd go for the anxiety over eating meat working itself out in the worst way in your subconscious dreaming mind theory. :D
If we're taking strange dreams, the one my DH told me he had last night's a doozy. The two of us were having sex on the side of the side (why didn't we do it in the road) and the Israeli army passed by. I guess I should be glad it was me in the dream. He couldn't explain why it was the Israeli army or if we were in Israel. He can't come up with anything that would have "fed" that dream last night.
It's very typical for vegetarians to have meat-eating dreams.
I've known several vegetarians and they've all reported having said dreams--including me!
I used to have them frequently. But they've gone away. In fact, I hadn't even realized they'd gone away until I read your post and remembered them.
Now I realize I probably haven't had a meat-eating dream in about a year.
I am currently 2 years veg and 2.5 years vegan.
Hope this is helpful.
I feel cheated somehow... I've never had a meat dream. Uh, sushi dreams, yes. Meat, no. LOL
I don't think I've ever had meat dreams, but I've had dairy ones. Maybe because meat was pretty easy for me to give up?
It's usually me impulsively eating something without checking out its veganness first. Or, someone goes, "you think it's vegan?" and I'm like "of course!" and start chowing down... only to wake up, realizing, umm... that was cream cheese...
But they're not really nightmares. Just "wow, that was a weird dream."
In fact, I haven't had nightmares in forever... does that mean I'm really healthy/happy or really not? ??? Eh, good riddance, right?

(why didn't we do it in the road)
nice beatles reference!
My bad meat dreams are of eating lamb chops and I wake up because in the dream I am choking on fat or the bone. I wake up so disgusted. I think mine stems from the fact that one of my last meat meals was this very thing and it tasted like it had "gone off." I used to love this particular thing stemming from a vacation to England in the 1990s where I had them daily. This last experience, I swore I'd never ever ever NEVER have another one and I never ever will have another one. I don't understand dreaming about them now. Plus, when I wake up from this one my first waking thought is of wooley black faced sheep and I am more horrified. Yup, it is Dave on the loose in my head.
Who was that masked omnivore?? ;D :D
Wow, I thought I was the only one. I dreamt just the other night that I was chowing down on some ham. In the dream, it tasted bad but for some reason, I kept eating it. I woke up totally grossed out. This has happened to me before with different meats.
Having those meat dreams and phantoms s**k! What's just as bad is having meat phantoms during the day (especially around a meal time) This morning I had the distinct taste of breakfast sausage and Egg McMuffin. That is just plain wrong! It may be your mind trying to revert to a state it is more familiar with or a more relaxed state, a search for comfort food. Mind over matter! ;)
I've been ovo-lacto for almost 10 years, but about 4 months ago, I started removing the ovo from my diet (I'm a batch of leftover matzo ball soup and 3 frozen Boca Italian sausage links away from being completely egg-free! I think it's worse to waste food I've already bought.) But that dietary choice came because of a bad dream I had. I shouldn't have gone bed hungry. I was eating like out of this huge egg, with the top cut off of the shell, with a spoon (don't remember what that's called?) But it wasn't eggy tasting, and I remember thinking in the dream "wow this is so much better than any other egg I ever ate". I looked down, and no wonder, it was full of like cooked up chickeny shredded meat! Which, basically, is what eggs eventually become, I've just always been ok with eating them. I woke up disgusted with myself for eating basically chicken zygotes (though, I've heard the eggs are usually not fertilized, it's just the "blanks", if you will ???) A few days later I posted my tofu egg-like breakfast sandwich recipe to this site. So I'm thankful for the wake-up call, though it happened when I was asleep!
I don't know if it has anything to do with craving non-veggie foods I doubt it.
I go to www.swoon.com to decipher my dreams. Go there and see what sausage means.
Whether it's true or not the explanations it's still good entertaintment.
