Is toasted sesame oil the same as sesame oil?
In continuing my search for the best hummus recipe that doesn't contain tons of tahini, :-X I made this recipe yesterday that called for a tablespoon of sesame oil. I used the only kind I had that was close, Boyajian brand toasted sesame oil. It was one of the travel size bottles you can get at World Market. Anyway, the hummus is totally nasty! The sesame oil completely overpowers the rest of the recipe with this weird taste that I can only describe as chalky. Did I use the wrong kind of oil? Or maybe I should just try it again with olive oil or something. Idk.
I've never used toasted sesame oil but a tablespooon sounds like alot. Sesame oil has a strong flavor, it would definitely over power the hummus, I would think.
Toasted sesame oil has a completely different flavor than regular. In my recipes in my cookbook, I always specify dark (toasted) sesame oil when that is what I'm calling for. In hummus, I would use XV olive oil for the most authentic flavor. I wouldn't want to eat hummus w/ toasted sesame oil in it, unfortunately!! :P
haha yeah I don't want to eat it either! I think I'll toss it and try again with just a good ev olive oil. I hate wasting food but it really is inedible.
Toasted sesame oil has a very strong flavor. I usually use it in Asian recipes and especially salad dressings, only a small amount (teaspoon or less) for flavoring, in addition to another oil. A little goes a long way.
