Question for the long time vegans

How long does it take for the desire for creamy anything to go away?  :-\

I had no problem with meat, eggs, dairy products themselves.  Not even chocolate was this bad.

I'm seriously missing 'creamy' anything.  Salad dressings particularly.

I tried a cashew based creamy dressing.  blecchhh.

I'm not going back to vegetarian. I'm just wondering how long until I forget what it tastes like.  ...sigh...

You can definitely make amazing substitutes!

What kind of creamy dressing did you used to like? ranch? I've never made vegan ranch but I know many have and apparently it's great. I think they also sell vegan ranch at many health food stores.

You know you can still eat chocolate, too, right? You really should have to give much of anything up when you go vegan. Tell us what you want and we will point you to recipes or brands that are good!

I think I'm overdosing on avocados just to get the creamy thing in.

Any kind of dressing really.  Mostly ranch I think.  If I could get a good substitute that would help.

There's something in the Follow Your Heart dressings that I'm allergic to. I live near the restaurant and I'm there regularly. I asked them what it could be and no one could tell me.  So I just steer clear of those dressings. I'd prefer to make my own anyway.

I'm doing ok with the Daiya cheese for now. I'd like to just not want it all, but that doesn't seem to be happening.

I'd love any recipes for creamy dressings anyone wants to share.  Thanks so much!

Hmmm... Well I used to make a creamy tahini dressing that was AMAZING, imo, but now I have to remember what I mixed in there..

tahini
lemon juice
apple cider vinegar
soy sauce
black pepper
chives
parsley? (i don't remember if i put that in there)

here is an actual recipe that looks similar that i found
http://vegetarian.about.com/od/saucesdipsspreads/r/goddessdressing.htm

but i never measured anything... it was awesome!

I get my creamy dressing fix using Mori-Nu silken tofu ( firm and lite kind usually).  This recipe is my favorite: http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2007/01/susans-lite-goddess-dressing.html.

I've also replaced the cashews with the tofu in other dressing recipes with success.  Adjust the amounts of liquids and seasonings to compensate for the lack of cashews and additional moisture provided by the tofu though.

vegan ranch: i like mine really thick you can thin it out with more "milk" or make it even thicker with more "mayo"... i don't even measure anymore

    1/4 cup vanilla "milk"
1 cup soy vegan mayonnaise (vegenaise)
    1 teaspoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon garlic powder
    1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
    1 tablespoon dried parsley
    pepper to taste

(this is an adaptation of this recipe http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7099.0)

i have never liked 'honey" mustard dressing before but this http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=24128.0 is freakin delicious!

the best alfredo i have had so far is this:

http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=11908.0

it does need lots of seasoning to make it taste amazing i use creole (tony chachere's brand is my fave seasoning EVER!)

if certain dressings are making you feel sick: i know for me if i consume too many products containing soy i get ill :( i have developed some kind of sensitivity to it... these recipes all contain soy products FYI i just limit my intake now and i don't get sick from soy too often

you can buy ranch dip and dressing mix in the kosher section of some stores.  It is as good as I remember it tasting from prevegan days

Not true. I used to eat TONS of cheese. And now I think it smells like barf.

Seeds of Change makes a some vegan dip mixes. So does a local company here. There is also another brand of creamy vegan salad dressings. Nasoya, maybe?

Have you tried tofutti cream cheese and sour cream. I think they rule, and you can use the cream cheese to make all kinds of yummy creamy things. Spinach casseroles, dips, cheesecakes, etc.

I believe it's lipton, but it says kosher on the box and it is by the international foods.  They sell it at some of the Kroger's, but not all of them.

This is creamy -->  Insanely Good Spinach-Artichoke Dip

It tastes better with about 1/2 cup of nutritional yeast mixed in.

I'm so excited I'm going to cry!

Now if I didn't have to work I'd be home making all these yummy sauces and dips.
I've been existing on hummus lately to get a kinda creamy fix. Trying to stay away from da avocados.

Thank you thank you thank you!

I've been making an easy spinach dip with half a cup vegan mayo, a container of tofutti sour cream, a bag of frozen spinach, 1 bunch of green onions, a packet of onion soup mix and water chestnuts.  Soooooo good and taste just like I remember it tasting!!

also try AC's recipe for cheezy potatoes, they are amazing and very creamy

I think it's different for everyone.  Though time and good substitutes for things you love definitely help:)

There are so many creamy delicious vegan recipes, dips and products out there.

The Daiya cheese and Tofutti cream cheese are so good that even my hard-to-please non-vegan sweetie enjoys them.

I thought I would miss cheese too. My first 2-3 months of veganism were challenging. But now even with the great vegan cheeses out there I don't really crave cheese.

Here are some suggestions for your creamy fix (although, to be honest, you're probably better off with the avocados):

Tofu Sour Cream
I mix it with a packet of soup/dip mix.  If the mix is salty, you may want to leave the salt out of the recipe.

Really, pureed Mori-Nu tofu can add creaminess to all kinds of things.  For example, Potato Soup with Rosemary and Roasted Garlic.

Dragonfly's Bulk, Dry Uncheese Mix
This makes a huge amount; so you probably want to make about a 1/3 recipe until you're sure you like it.  I use a coffee grinder for the cashews, because my blender sucks.

I think once you get the hang of vegan cooking, you won't feel deprived at all.  ;)b

Don't fear the avocados! They are everything that is good and holy in this world. :) As for the cashew dip, don't give up hope. It might just have been a bad mix, or not to your tastes.

And not everyone keeps craving cheese. A few weeks in, I was super duper jonesing for cheap, fluoro-orange cheddar, and then I just thought about the feeling of waxy, plastic, cheese sliding over my incisors, and the craving turned into revulsion. A lot of times, if it's been a while since you've had something, you may think you're craving something that, if you actually had a bit, you would now find absolutely terrible.

I've been vegan for almost a decade now.  Cheese was the hardest thing for me to give up, and no decent substitutes where available then (at least not that I knew of.)  I don't know when it happened, but when I read this discussion I knew I no longer found cheese to be tempting.  My mother was slicing some lately, and it smells like dirty socks!

As far as creamy stuff goes, I really don't care for sauces with a lot of nutritional yeast in them.  Lately I've been on a raw cashew kick.  The cashew cheese sauce works well in any velveeta-type recipe.

Like Ibarte cheese was the hardest thing for me to give up.  I have been vegan for 13 years and I would say after a year or two I stopped missing it.  And after that it dairy started being disgusting to me like meat and eggs so that I don't even want to touch or smell it.  I don't mind a good vegan cheese, though.  One thing I thought was strange  was that I couldn't wait to try Daiya on pizza.  I was feeling nostalgic.  It was good and all, but I actually prefer my pizza with no cheese substitutes.  Just sauce and veggies.

I think it is different for everyone.  I have been vegetarian for 21 years and with meat it only took a couple of weeks for me to really be disgusted by it.  The longer I am veg the worse it is, just the smell makes me sick.
