organizing recipe box

i thought that someone mentioned awhile back about customizing their vegweb recipe box... into things like "snacks, desserts, etc". is this possible? and how do you do it?
i see the calendar, and how to do breakfast, lunch and dinners, but im wondering if i can organize it under categories?

also, for your home recipe books... im assuming you all have a plethora of vegweb recipes printed out and pages torn from here and there... how do you all organize your books/ recipe cards?

right now, miine is a mess. i tried to do things like muffins, dinners, dips, etc....
any tips?

Argh, I'm not one to give advice here, because I want to do the same thing!  My recipe box is hella looong!  The ones that I have printed out, I just keep in a binder, but not even organized!  Just stuffed into the same sleeve, so I have to riffle though them to find the right recipe.  How sad.

But, its definitely on my to-do list!  A daunting task.....
Good luck!  I'm looking forward to any advice as well!

i think that was me way back when and i STILL am hoping for some way to organize it online.  i never print them off, just put my computer on the kitched counter when i cook and the more recipes i find to cook the more crazy-long my 'box' is.

admin- pretty pretty please with sucanat on top make a way for us to organize out recipe boxes into catagories  :) :-*

Might not want to follow mine because I'm anal retentive...but they're sorted as follows,

Breads/Muffins, Condiments, Desserts, Drinks, Entrees, Hors d'ouvres, Pantry Essentials, Side Dishes, Soups/Salads

They're in protective sleeves (sp) so if I spill they're easily wiped off and in color coded divided sections.  I know...I need help.

I don't think that you can customize your recipe box here.

I do have a fabulous way for organizing my recipes though. I have a big three ring binder that I keep all my stuff in. I print out my recipes on card stock (double sided) just make sure you put the same sort of recipe on the back i.e. desserts with desserts etc. The card stock is nice because it hold up well against drips. Any recipes from magazines etc. get pasted to a card stock page. I punch holes in both sides of the pages so I can easily change around the order. I go through it every week and put the recipes I want to prepare at the front of the book.

I also color code. Vegan recipes are on white. Non vegan recipes get printed on color paper so I know that I have to veganize when I pull it out. This way I can write notes about what I did and didn't like and what I want to try next time.

No, there is not currently a way to sort recipes in your recipe box into folders. Additions like this to the site are, well, financially difficult. However, we are currently having a new recipe box system with folders written, and it should be done in a couple of weeks or so. At this point, I don't know if we will be able to have the recipes from the current recipe box system imported into the new, but we'll try. If it doesn't work, we'll give something like 60 days for people to add their recipes to the new system manually before removing the link to the old system.

I just sort of have my cookbooks in a pile  :D

As for vegweb, or any other online-recipes, I bookmark them and separate them from other bookmarks via a folder. When I get around to it, I integrate the recipes into documents I have on my computer... I have one for each category, e.g., a "desserts" documents, a "bread" document, even a "Super American Recipes document." I try to organize stuff by type within there. It works sometimes...

And a lot of the time I just find an old recipe by doing a search on my hard drive (sometimes I don't remember what I considered Super American or not!)

You're amazing.

And those were my thoughts exactly. 8) Jeez... Nice! I am going to employ your technique, tanevab! I love organization more than anything (also more than a little OCD here... ::)), and that sounds awesome!

I don't have my favorite recipes "organized"
If I print the recipe from online (vegweb or fatfreekitchen etc.)
I paste it in a Mead Compostion book on the left side. And make notes on the right side.
I date it and write about any changes I made or substitutions. This helps SO much when 'veganizing' regular recipes. I write about how the sub turned out and what I may want to do next time or if it was perfect. Yes, the book is ragged and not pretty, nor is it 'organized' perfectly but it does help a great deal when making the recipe again in the future, so it's useful.

I use four big three-ring binders:

- Untried Vegan Recipes
- Tried and True Vegan Recipes
- Vegan Recipes
- Unvegan Recipes (just in case I can veganize them)

1)  I print out the recipe, along with any reviews, and then staple the pages.
2)  I read through all of the reviews and revise the main recipe as to any changes I want to make according to the reviews.
3)  I slip the recipe into a transparent sheet and place it in the Untried Vegan Recipes binder.
4)  If I plan to make a recipe during the week, I put it out on the kitchen counter (sometimes I have several recipes in a pile).
This helps when I am making out my grocery list for the week; I can easily figure out and write down needed ingredients.
5)  While I'm cooking, I write my revisions on the recipe (usually in pencil) for the next time I make it.
6)  If it turns out great, I put the recipe in the Tried and True Vegan binder. If it's just passable, I put it in Vegan binder.

I haven't separated my recipes into more specific categories yet (desserts, soups, etc.), though I plan to.

If you are messy (like I am), I really recommend transparent sheets. I think if I didn't use them, my recipes would be totally unreadable (covered with spills and splotches of food).

I also avoid buying cookbooks, because I usually only end up using a dozen recipes from most of them. So I request the cookbook from the library, photocopy the recipes I want, and place them in the transparent sheets to go in the Untried Vegan binder.

I'm glad that I'm not the only crazy organizer! Thanks for the compliments.

JH I love the notebookstyle. At somepoint when I'm feeling like I need a project I want to handwrite all of my recipes into a notebook like that. Something to hand down to future vegans.
