My successful vegan dinner party

I had some people over for a simple dinner and a movie party, and it was a big success.  I served inexpensive fare- spaghetti with tomato sauce, big bread, steamed broccilli with garlic and lemon (all this is is broccilli steamed with some mined garlic and then tossed with a squeeze of a lemon and some salt) salad and two desserts- Moosewood's brownies and some plum cobbler made froma  recipe in The Vegetarian Family Cookbook.  I thought it was all rather humble, but my friends LOVED IT.

I think a good, homemade dessert, plus homemade bread, means just about anything you make will look good.

Have you ever had a successful vegan dinner party?  Did your guests know it was vegan?  I never mentioned that fact to mine, since it was all 'normal'  (eyeroll) food.

Ummmm.....I made a vegetarian  breakfast burrito for an omni friend and he didn't know the difference...or didn't say anything and ate the whole thing anyway. :)  I have since learned to make much better breakfast burritos. :)

I agree. Homemade = made with love  ;D
Congrats on a successful dinner - there's such satisfaction in that.

Last Thanksgiving, (the first my husband and I spent as a married couple!) I had family and in-laws over for a vegan feast.  All the work involved was definately worth it to show them that it IS possible to have Thanksgiving without a bird as centerpiece.
It was enjoyed by all...except for my verrry discriminating Italian mom, who barely picked at her food, claiming she wasn't hungry, and then later complained to another family member that the food wasn't filling (uuh yeah..when you ate about 3 forkfulls, I'm not surprised ::) )

Congrats on your good dinner!!! I love when what I make for others is well recieved!!! tofuisforlovers, sorry to hear about your mom. Some people just don't want to try anything new. My mom is similiar. I think part of it is they see your diet change as a critisim of the way they cook and the way they raised you. Try not to take it personally.

Congrats Stars! You're right - home made bread works every time. Makes the whole house smell good when you walk in.

The best vegan dinner I've had recently was:

Hands-on spring rolls as appetizer (fun for everyone to take a try!) w/chili-peanut sauce.
Tomato chutney on potato/pea samosas
Grilled veggies w/miso-mirin sauce

And my friends brought vegan cookies.

Veggie lasagne with tofu "ricotta" always goes down well. Now that I have an empanada press I can see fruit podgi pies in my future...
And for those who grew up outside the southern Midwest, a podgi pie is made in a press and cooked in the oven or on coals. You can cook them in the press if you're on your own. You use a scone-type mixture for the crust and sandwich in whatever.

Yabbit - that sounds incredible! Like a warm scone with the jam on the inside. People are just so smart sometimes. Shall we see a recipe posted sometime soon?!

Tofu...Lovers - what was the menu? I'm co-hosting Tday with a supportive omni this year and lookin' for ideas.
