Have any of you ever been to "Mellow Mushroom?" I have been several times, but only once since going vegan. Anyway, I'm going tonight and was plannign to get their tempeh sandwich b/c i've had it before and it's good. So, I was telling the kid at work about going there for dinner and he said they have really good soy cheese pizzas there. Now, I have yet to find a soy cheese that I could even swallow...well tofutti slices...but those aren't great on pizza. Anyway, so this kid is vegetarian and said he eats real cheese all the time. So, now I 'm intrigued about this soy cheese that the "real cheese eater" says is "awesome" (his words).
So, have any of you had soy cheese pizza at Mellow Mushroom? What did you think?
I know this isn't any help, but my brain read it as Marshmallow! haha, aw, I want a marshmallow...
What state is it in? sounds delicious!
I have no idea about this place's pizza, but be aware (maybe you already are) that soy cheese is not always vegan. It often contains casein (cow milk protein). It'd be in the ingredients, if you can look.
have you checked yelp.com? i always look at their reviews before i go to a restaurant if i can. even if the one in your area doesnt have a page, im sure one in atlanta does and they probably use the same 'cheeze'. or look up their website.. or call them to find out which brand they use?
Ok. So, I got the veggie pizza with soy cheese. I felt pretty good b/c when I asked about the cheese, the waiter said, "ok, so you want a vegan pizza?" It was really good. I think I'm gonna check out that site to make sure it's vegan. They have a few options on the menu labeled "can be made vegan," so I don't see why they would bother with non-vegan soy cheese, but you never know. I'm gonna check for next time. I hope it is vegan though...the pizza was really good.
oh man, I wouldn't have made it through grad school without the Mellow. At the time, it was the only place in Savannah I could get actual vegan food. My understanding is that the cheese they get is different at each of the franchises because it's all about which distributor is available in the area. The one that was near my hometown (in Atl) had casein -free soy cheese (but that was back when none of it was edible...you think it's bad now *yuk*) but the one in Savannah only had access to one type (through Sisco) and it wasn't vegan. When Will and I met we were both "full-blown"vegan and Mellow Mushroom was the only place we could go eat at first. My sister worked at one in Atlanta in High School (quit b/c there were "too many drugs" I laughed..."you worked at a place called Mellow Mushroom, for goodness sakes. What did you expect?" I think being stoned is part of the job description....but I love them just the same...) ;D
Their Tempeh sub on WW, hold the feta, add avocado was my staple for years. Oh yum...
