Is the Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal vegan ...

or is there a non-vegan ingredient in the ingredient list(below)?

I saw Rice Krispies in the I Can't Believe It's Vegan list and just want to make sure before I make Chocolate Butterscotch Rice Krispy treats.

Ingredients
RICE, SUGAR, SALT, MALT FLAVORING, HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, IRON, ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), ALPHA TOCOPHEROL ACETATE (VITAMIN E), NIACINAMIDE, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B6), RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE (VITAMIN B1), FOLIC ACID, VITAMIN D, VITAMIN B12. TO MAINTIAN QUALITY, BHT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE PACKAGING.

IMO if you're concerned about vitamins: vitamin D is probably not vegan... you should call if you're concerned

What's IMO stand for? Sorry, I'm slow on the tech talk.

Thank you for explaining. :)I did contact Kellogg's and await a response. I was just wondering if anyone here knew cause I am craving chocolate peanut butter rice krispy treats real bad.

I don't use Rice Krispies because I, too, think the vitamins aren't all vegan.  I'm pretty disappointed in general with lack of crispness of non-Rice Krispie puffed rice cereal, but Erewhon Crispy Brown Rice Cereal is crispy.  I recommend it.  Plus, it's organic.

baypuppy-I hope Kellogg's responds to my inquiry. If they do I will post it here. Confusing since it's on the Accidentally Vegan list.

humboldt_honey-Thanks for that suggestion. I'll look for that. I tried an organic puffed rice cereal and it was not crispy and just plain blah. Not good for Rice Krispy treats.

Kellogg's Rice Krispies cereal is not vegan.

These Kellogg's products are vegan-friendly, according to a response from the Kellogg's Consumer Affairs Department.

Mini-Wheats ® Unfrosted Bite Size
SK Protein Plus
SK Red Berries

"Thanks for your email about our vegan cereals!

The animal derived ingredients we use in cereals includes gelatin (in the
frosting of Mini-Wheats and in cereals with marshmallow bits), vitamin D (see
more information below), or whey (used in Special K for added protein). The
following cereals do not have any of these ingredients and as of Dec 2007 are
free of animal derived products:

Mini-Wheats ® Unfrosted Bite Size
SK Protein Plus
SK Red Berries

We appreciate your interest in our company and products."

'why the hell don't they make them the same here as the US.  And on the UK Kellogg's website it has a section to search for vegan products.

Sorry to say Saskia, but the Rice Krispies are vegan in the UK!

shelloid-Lucky you! I didn't know that. Thanks. I'm going to write Kellogg's lady back about that.
amymylove-now I gotta try that cereal. I ended up getting the brown rice cereal humboldt_honey suggested and it was quite good.

I'll look out for those store brand rice cereals. That's a good idea. Thank you.

Hahaha. I didn't mean to tease. The Chocolate Butterscotch Crispy Treats recipe is  essentially the Scotcheroos recipe made with vegan ingredients. I used brown rice cereal and unrefined sugar. Looking for a similar recipe though that doesn't use corn syrup.

Scotcheroos

1 cup light corn syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup peanut butter
6 cups Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal or Kellogg's® Cocoa Krispies™ cereal
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate morsels
1 cup butterscotch chips

Directions

Place corn syrup and sugar into 3-quart saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until sugar dissolves and mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat. Stir in peanut butter. Mix well. Add Kellogg's® Rice Krispies® cereal. Stir until well coated. Press mixture into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Set aside.

Melt chocolate and butterscotch chips together in 1-quart saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly. Spread evenly over cereal mixture. Let stand until firm. Cut into 2 x 1-inch bars when cool

how about if you use brown rice syrup instead of corn syrup?

this really makes me want to find some vegan butterscotch chips.. although maybe if i used brown rice syrup that caramel-y flavor might make up for the lack of butterscotch chips..?  it'd be worth it to try.. worst case scenario would be chocolate caramely rice crispy treats..

I like brown rice syrup but it's a bit pricey at the store near me. I thought about using agave but it's not as thick so I don't know if it will produce firm crispy treats.

propinecone, here's a crispy treat recipe that doesn't call for butterscotch chips. I used up all my brown rice syrup making it but it's quite good.

Peanut Butter Crispy Rice Treats from Alicia Silverstone

1 3/4 cups brown rice syrup
1 pinch sea salt
3/4 cup peanut butter or almond butter (all natural)
1 box brown rice crisps cereal
1/2 cup grain-sweetened chocolate chips (optional)

Heat rice syrup with a pinch of salt in a saucepan over low heat. When rice syrup liquefies, add peanut butter and stir until well combined and heated through.

Pour entire box of cereal into a large bowl. Pour rice syrup mixture on top. Use your hands to incorporate everything together (mix in grain-sweetened chocolate chips at this point, if using).

Press down into an 8- ×8-inch or 9- ×13-inch baking dish. Wet your fingers as your press down to keep them from sticking. Let cool for 1 hour before cutting into squares.
