I'm no longer a Tofu Virgin..
Haha.. well, I did it! Okay, so I did taste a tiny bite of some pre-marinaded triangular tofu about a year ago.. it scared the shit out of me and wasn't cooked, either.. so that was more like forplay. Anyways, here's how it happened:
I cut up a bit of firm tofu into tiny slivers and marinated it for an hour in some "Soy Vay Island Teriyaki" sauce.. (by the way, that sauce is the shit)
I tore some decent size peices of iceburg lettuce (I'm so picky), washed them, and placed them on a plate, in a few layered stacks.
I poured the tofu slivers plus the sauce into a skillet for a while.
I then added some of my left-over steamed rice with carrots, peas, and corn.
I stirred and let sizzle........ ;)
I poured a little bit of soy sauce in..
THEN!
I scooped the delicious smelling mixture into my lettuce wraps.
Then I bit into sweet bliss..
Okay, I'm getting a little carried away with the whole losing my tofu virginity thing.. To get down to it, the taste was amazing. I'm still not used to the texture of the tofu, though.. Luckily, I had layered the lettuce a couple of times, so that kind of helped hide it. Is there some type of vegan friendly shake 'n bake sort of product to help crunchen it up a bit??
I was excited to share the news though.. I'm glad I finally grew the balls to try it! Once I have more money next month, I'll for sure add some things.
Oh: here's a picture of the sauce I used.
Yay for trying it!
Did you freeze, thaw, and press it first? That drastically changes the texture.
And shake n bake is vegan! (not all of them, just read the ingredients) (and as long as i didnt miss anything last time i checked)
No, I didn't freeze it.. I just bought it today. I drained a bit of the water out though.. still quite jello-y.
Next time buy it ahead of time, freeze it and let it thaw. Then do something to press all the water out of it. (i put it in between 2 cutting boards with weights on top.)
This gets rid of the gross squishy texture.
 Thanks for the advice.
Ughhhh.. I don't know if it's from the gross texture of the tofu, or if I'm just getting sick.. but I feel like shit. :(
