IBS Breakfast cereal
Swoop asked me to post this recipe:
A few years back I went to a nutritionalist for my ibs, her and I came up with this high fiber, high protien breakfast cereal to help remedy my issues. It does help ALOT! I've been bad and haven't been eating it lately like I should....I need to start back up again. I couldn't find the exact recipe, I lost it I guess, but I've been eye-balling it for awhile now so here it is!
2 cups raw oats
1/2 cup oat bran
1/2 cup flax meal
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup soy lechtin
1/4 cup chopped almonds
1/8 cup apple pectin
I mix this all together in a huge tuperware container and store it in the frig. She told me to eat 1 cup every morning, but all I can get down 1/2 cup. It's very tasty, just very filling! I'd say start with 1/2 cup and if you're still hungery increase up to 1 cup. I'm lazy, so I add water and microwave, but I think it would be better for you if you cook this on the stove. I put the cereal scoop in a bowl and fill the bowl with water just until the cereal is covered. When the cereal is done cooking its the same consistency as a bowl of oatmeal. I also add a little agave nectar or maple syrup, some fruit (strawberries, raspberries, rasins or bananas).
Let me know how this works for you! After a couple weeks of eating it I becamse pretty regula, ie no D or C.
pooh bear, I LOVE YOU! Thanks so much for sharing. I start back to school next week ( I am a teacher), which means my IBS will rear its ugly head with a vengence since my nerves will be up. You have no idea what perfect timing it is to be able to add something new to my regimine of defenses against it. What type of Dr. did you go to? I never had one that would take time to help me create recipes like that. I really appreciate this! :)>>>
She's just a nutritionalist and she was actually free! Vitamin Cottage (a health food store in Colo) has a nutritionalist on staff and you can make appointments with her for free. She is awesome and she's very non biased, meaning she doesn't use her position to sell products for the store. She also told me for C with spasms to take 1000 mg of magnesium and 1000 mg panothentic acid until it clears. That actually works too, it relaxed smooth muscle, ie your intestines and colon. Do not do this for D, it will just make D worse. She also said it's important to take a digestive enzyme with meals and some kind of omega supplement like borage or flax oil. Ya, that cereal recipe is pretty awesome actually and it tastes good! I've converted that recipe into muffins too when I'm tired of cereal.
Thanks so much for sharing your suggestions. Not much has worked for me when I get anxious and/or stressed. If you come across anything else - recipes, solutions, please share. I will post in the future to let you know if anything helped.
:)
pooh bear,
I found all the ingredients for this cereal. (By the way, the apple pectin powder came in the smallest container and was so expensive - did you have a fairly inexpensive brand you bought?). How long did you nuke the cereal and water for in the microwave? I want to try that way first since it is quicker in the morning. Thanks so much!
yes, I get apple pectin really cheap! Its like around 3.50 bucks for a 12 oz bag. Its by NOW nutrition and I get it at Vitamin Cottage, a local health food store. The 12 oz bag usuually lasts quit a few months. If I do the math right, 1 oz = approx 1/8 cups, so that bag lasts almost a year. Is that comparable to what you paid? I usually only have to nuke it for about a minute, but it depends how much water you add. The more water, the longer nuking time.
Thanks, but I paid way to much for the apple pectin I bought - I won't reveal because it was ridiculous - live and learn and ask questions so you don't repeat the same mistakes is what I say. I am going to make this up this weekend because right on target - I am having a difficult time of things. I so thank you, and hang in there, because I see you are going through a lot too - take extra good care of yourself!
Hey Swoop, here is one link were you could ordre it for 3 bucks:
http://store.agoodvitamin.com/nowapfiwiapp.html
If that doesn't work or you can't find it cheaper, let me know, we could work out something where by I ship you some.
Hope the cereal works out!

Thanks so much - I was starting to freak out at the cost of making this cereal. I will certainly let you know if it helps. I did try the magnesium/ panothetic acid combo, and then just the p acid by itself - made me dizzyish. I have tried the magnesium before and it just does not make me feel right - also tried different doses. It does do its job after a while though. What has your experience been?
I find the cereal is pretty cheap to make. I can get all the ingredients in bulk for pretty darn cheap! I spend like 20 buck and it last honeslty about a year.
the magnesium/pan acid works pretty well for me. I just sometimes have to adjust the dosing to fit what is going on with my IBS. The pan acid stays pretty consistent, the magnesium I adjust between 400 and 800 mgs depending on if I'm constipated or not.
hey. I have struggled with constipation forever and I dont' have IBS but i have looked for a long time and never listened to my friend who is in the natural health field.
Maybe this will help.
I eat a salad every day (nothing heavy though, greens, cucumber, red pepper)
2-3 tablespoons of ground flax seed (this firms of the bowel movement) (Lots of fiber and healthy omega's). I see you already have that in your cereal.
Even with that stuff it would be inconsistent. Sometimes I would go and sometimes not much.
*BUT what I think really did it was I JUICE 6oz of spinach every night and sometimes add beet and parsley.*
Spinach I think is high in magnesium, but it definitely works for me. It has become my nightly "medicine". I have read a lot of juicing spinach and I like the fact that it is also so good for the body.
I know this might not pertain to you but I thought possibly these can maybe benefit.
I used to cry cause I couldn't go.
This has been a godsend for me.
No Illusions, the spinach idea is very interesting. I do eat quite a bit of spinach, and I find it does help, but I never really paid a ton of attention to it. I do not do well with raw salads - too irritating to my system (gas, bloating), but wilt my spinach a bit and put it on my sandwiches for lunch instead of lettuce. I would love to try juicing it. can you recommend a good, fairly reasonably priced juicer - I can probably check some of the other threads on this too - I am always open to trying anything that might help! :)
I wonder if purshasing an all natural spinach juice would do the same thing? I have a juicer, but for time purposes may not be able to do this more than a couple times a week.
I use an expensive juicer Solastar ($200) but I know there are cheaper versions maybe a Jack Lalane juicer?
Eating the spinach didn't help me. I juice right before I go to bed and since it does take about 15min. from start to finish. I usually add parsely since it is supposed to be really good for you.
I tried everything beforehand. I just didn;pt want to drink spinach juice, but really it makes like less than 8 ounces I drink it in 3 gulps and consider it the wonderful medicine.
Since the raw food upsets your tummy I wouldn't take the juice right before sleeping maybe in the middle of the day. Juicing is SO good for your overall health but spinach juice is REALLY helpful for intestinal health. SO are beets and dandelion
I have done tons of research you can goggle spinach juice. The juice digests quickly into your body. Maybe this is how you can get more raw into your diet. But start slow.
Let me know if you need more info.
Thanks very, very much. Constipation is the biggest part of my IBS issues, so any related information is wonderful. I know with either "affliction" that not everything works for everyone, but for many of us - especially those who eat super healthy and exercise, it is very frustrating to have to deal with this stuff. I know for me it can be very limiting, and my mood becomes horrid! I end up just wanting to be left alone and not do anything (Not an option!) Usually the best information comes from remedies that have nothing to do with a pharmacy and a Dr.'s office. Tried them, the side effects and the results stink. I hate medication! I appreciate your input, both of you guys! I am very thankful for my vegweb friends!
:-*
Yeah, I cut out all wheat and most grains (didn't really eat them much anyway).
My colonic therapist repeatedly told me spinach juice would help...for about a year. Oh and I have stopped seeing her since I am regular now. I think its high in magnesium too. I juice about 6oz every night. That works for me. It might be more for you
really when I went for a colonic and had eaten wheat pasta, I was ALWAYS backed up it was pretty obvious for me that too much wheat wasn't helpful to me.
During this summer, Then I started eating 2-3 tbs of ground flaxseed in light coconut milk for breakfast, lunch was a salad with more easily digestable veggies.
I also for the FIRST time in my life started having good fats. Handful of walnuts or seeds everyday. I was terrified of fats beforehand. I think the oils in the fats help lubricate.
I only drink water as well.
I realize for me I HAVE to eat really healthy unlike my bf who could eat dirt and still go 3X a day.
Really if you have any more quest. ask. :)
I actually tell my bf everytime I "go" because before only little balls would come out and I used to feel so bloated.
I also take triphala (Indian natural fruit herb to help as well) It didn;t help on its own with the flaxseed but I am too scared too stop it right now so I slowly dwindling the amount from 5 a day to 3 now.
Well, you have probably hit one nail on the head for sure. Now I know that I need to get more of the good fats in my diet. I am still one of those fat phobic people (Stupid, stupid, stupid, I know, but my reality never the less). Hearing your experience will be the push I need to finally get over it I think. That is probably one of my key issues that will help clear it up. I think I will commit to pooh bear's cereal for a while as a first step, if you look at the ingredients, it is full of good fats. If that helps then I know my answer. I mixed up the batch tonight, and will let you guys know how it goes.
After a few weeks, if that does not help ( or even if it does, I think I will try the juicing - always wanted to anyway). I will hunt out a juicer in the meantime. I love a mission! I have always wondered about wheat too, as wheat bran always bothers me. I am a sandwich girl, though. Any suggestions on "wheatless breads"? Is there such a thing?

Any gluten free bread is 'wheatless' by default.... I eat only gluten free because I have to, I have celiac disease. But from what I hear gluten free is suppose to be better for you. Gluten free means no wheat, rye, malt, barley, spelt.... oats are controversial on if they are actually gf, but I dont have an issue with them and I have celiac with a vengence so....I figure they are okay. I know millet and quonoa (sp) are excelt grains to look for.
Mary's Gone Crackers are GREAT. They are gluten-free and soooo yummy!
Okay, thanks. That is another thing to look at. Pooh bear, I made the cereal this morning, and it was delish! I measured a 1/2 cup and then nuked with a cup of water - like oatmeal for 2 min. By the time it was cool, the consistency was great. I put some molasses on for sweetness and some soy milk with it - wasn't even too heavy. How do you modify it to make it into muffins? I like something a little different on the weekend, but want to keep this good mixture going!

Yay! I'm so glad you think its yummy! I like it too and its SO good for you! Loaded with fiber, protien and good fats! Off the top of my head to make the cereal into muffins or bread....
2 cups of cereal
1 banana mashed
1/2 cup apple sauce
1/8 cup coconut oil (or any vegetable oil)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
spices- nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger. I usually use pumpkin pie spice. If you can't find pumpkin pie spice pre-made let me know and I can give you the recipe to make your own.
1/2 cup sugar (i usually use raw sugar or turbinado)
1 tsp vanilla extract
VARIATIONS:
-Omit apple sauce and add 1 cup shredded zucchini for a zucchini type bread
- Omit apple sauce and add 1 cup shredded zucchini, 1 cup canned pumpkin and 1/2 additional cup cereal for a pumpkin/zucchini bread (my favorite!).
Swoop you might need to play around with the exact measurements. I am at a higher altitude so you may need a little less dry ingredents.... Oh, and if you don't like banana flavor use 2 eggs or if you're vegan use egg replacer; the banana is meant to replace eggs. I personally LOVE the banana flavor and banana works wonders for my IBS with D so....
Oh, ps- I tend to try and use coconut oil with cooking/baking as long as the coconut flavor mixes well with the dish. Coconut Oil is wonderful for colon 'abrasions' or irritation. Some people with IBS do actually have abrasions in there colon.... I've had colitits so I know I do. Just something to consider, and I love the added flavor!
