IBS Breakfast cereal

Swoop asked me to post this recipe:

A few years back I went to a nutritionalist for my ibs, her and I came up with this high fiber, high protien breakfast cereal to help remedy my issues. It does help ALOT! I've been bad and haven't been eating it lately like I should....I need to start back up again. I couldn't find the exact recipe, I lost it I guess, but I've been eye-balling it for awhile now so here it is!

2 cups raw oats
1/2 cup oat bran
1/2 cup flax meal
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup soy lechtin
1/4 cup chopped almonds
1/8 cup apple pectin

I mix this all together in a huge tuperware container and store it in the frig. She told me to eat 1 cup every morning, but all I can get down 1/2 cup. It's very tasty, just very filling! I'd say start with 1/2 cup and if you're still hungery increase up to 1 cup. I'm lazy, so I add water and microwave, but I think it would be better for you if you cook this on the stove. I put the cereal scoop in a bowl and fill the bowl with water just until the cereal is covered. When the cereal is done cooking its the same consistency as a bowl of oatmeal.  I also add a little agave nectar or maple syrup, some fruit (strawberries, raspberries, rasins or bananas).

Let me know how this works for you! After a couple weeks of eating it I becamse pretty regula, ie no D or C.

Yeah, I cut out all wheat and most grains (didn't really eat them much anyway).

My colonic therapist repeatedly told me spinach juice would help...for about a year. Oh and I have stopped seeing her since I am regular now. I think its high in magnesium too. I juice about 6oz every night. That works for me.  It might be more for you

really when I went for a colonic and had eaten wheat pasta, I was ALWAYS backed up it was pretty obvious for me that too much wheat wasn't helpful to me.

During this summer, Then I started eating 2-3 tbs of ground flaxseed in light coconut milk for breakfast, lunch was a salad with more easily digestable veggies.

I also for the FIRST time in my life started having good fats. Handful of walnuts or  seeds everyday. I was terrified of fats beforehand. I think the oils in the fats help lubricate.

I only drink water as well.

I realize for me I HAVE to eat really healthy unlike my bf who could eat dirt and still go 3X a day.

Really if you have any more quest. ask.   :)

I actually tell my bf everytime I "go" because before only little balls would come out and I used to feel so bloated.

I also take triphala (Indian natural fruit herb to help as well) It didn;t help on its own with the flaxseed but I am too scared too stop it right now so I slowly dwindling the amount from 5 a day to 3 now.

I am breaking out my juicer and trying the spinach juice. How much raw spinach do you juice to equal the 6 oz? Just want a to make sure I buy enough...

Pooh bear, you need to rename this cereal "magic digestive cereal" or something.  I am a little gassy, but have never had so much success with a IBS/constipation remedy before!  I have done nothing different than eat this cereal for breakfast for the past 4 mornings.  I hope it continues - I might actually have to mix it with something a little less "strong" if it continues to work.  I can only hope that is the case...Big, huge, enormous hugs for sharing this with me.  Let's see if anyone else can benefit from it too!  I am going to make a batch of the muffins tonight since I don't usually do cereal on the weekend.  The pumpkin zucchini ones sound the best.

YAY! I am SO glad it is working for you! I need to get into the habit of eating it again, I've just been lazy lately really. The gassy won't last forever. That cereal has a TON of fiber in it and if you aren't use to eating that much fiber at once, it causes a little gas..... ya, that cereal is pretty good at....um....cleaning out naturally! YES, the zucchini pumpkin is so so yummy! I'm just so glad you are getting some relief with this!

The muffin/bread I made probably did not come out exactly right, but so super yummy this morning, and I know I am getting all that good stuff in. I am not a very good cook, but I am learning to be brave and just wing it with a lot more stuff especially when I have an omni husband and daughter, and will be the only one who eats whatever might turn out a little "off" anyway. I will keep you posted to let you know how things keep going.  :)

Pooh bear, I just wanted to thank you for sharing this amazing cereal.  I don't have IBS (that I know of) but had been having some issues (probably due to having an unusually terrible diet lately), and this made a huge difference.  Not to mention the fact that it tastes pretty good - all I added was cinnamon.  I think this is going into my regular oatmeal rotation.  Thank you so much!  :)>>>

I made and enjoyed the muffins last weekend, but they did not have the same "kick" for me that the cereal has.  It might be due to the banana, zucchini and pumpkin I added - they could have broken up the concentration of other ingredients that seem to be working for me.  Tuesday I went back to the cereal, and WOW - it is magic cereal! I am hoping this keeps up.  If not, I will rotate it out with something similar to keep reintroducing it.  Pooh bear, do you think you could post this as a new recipe (maybe "IBS breakfast cereal"), so that other "sufferers" might find it and could benefit?

I am glad I decided to read this thread.  My son an I both have IBS..without constipation.    My son goes at least 6 times a day...mine is more manageable but at times of stress it can be a nightmare. (It is actually what makes me hesitant about working outside the home :-[) Do you think this  cereal would work for just D?

Nope, it works for both C and D. I have both alternating and when I religiously eat this cereal daily I'm fairly regular. I literally get to where I poo 'normal' every morning.

Swoop- I submitted the recipe on vegweb so hopefully it gets posted soon  ;)b

Yeah Pooh Bear!  I hope this works for some other people, because it sure helps much more than anything else I have EVER tried for C!  If anyone else tries it and it works, please let us know!  :)
