I just ate vegan soul food
A new restaurant opened up here in Oakland and I had to try it out. I couldn't find the restaurant reviews or I would have added it to the list and put my review there. I ordered the Crispy Tofu plate which came with black eyed peas and mashed potatoes with gravy. They were out of the mashed potatoes, so I went with yams. My buddy ordered the BBQ tofu plate with macaroni cheese and corn on the cob. I got us a side order of fried okra to share.
Crispy Tofu: Best coating for any tofu I've had. I don't know what's in it and how it gets so crisp and delicious, but it was shockingly reminiscent to my fried catfish which was my FAVORITE prior to being veg*n.
Black Eyed Peas: These were on point
Yams were pretty good too.
I got to sample the Macaroni & Cheese and it was the best, creamiest macncheese I've ever tasted. I also tasted the bbq tofu which was good, too. The sauce is dark and smokey tasting. One of the better sauces I've had, for sure.
Right now, I'm stuffed. I can't wait to go back and try everything else on the menu!
Yay!
In nyc there is red bamboo and a few place in harlem.

"rinky dink hole in the wall"
not on a given saturday night when you can wait an hour and a half for a table.
the city vegan establishments are fairly well frequented.
Invite me to Oakland SB....please :> I don't know of ANY good veg restaurants in Colorado :P It would be good to have some....

I agree, dives are the best!

This place is definitely a hole in the wall.
*AHhhhOHHHAHhhhahahhhOOOo* You're making me crave cooked food! It sounds awesome SB!
Oh yum! It's not like I could find a restaurant in Moncton, NB, Canada that would serve soul food. I think I'm going to have to cook it myself. I am so craving some mashed potatoes right now!

Soul Vegetarian. I haven't eaten there yet, but I here it's pretty good. They make their own fake meat called kalebone or something like that. I found it while I was out and about in da ATL the other week, so it's on the list of places to try. ;)b
However, my fave veg restaurant in Atlanta is Chinese Buddha. I usually try to eat there when I am in the area. So good! ;D

Have you been to Boulder? Being a liberal college town, I always find Boulder to be a veg haven!
Vegan soul food is the best! So lucky!
Has anyone been to Quickie Too in Seattle or Tacoma?
Slowest. Service. Ever. (I swear those guys toke up in the back before each order). But that's what makes the name so funny.
There's an awesome place on the South Side of Chicago called Soul Vegetarian East. It's worth taking public transit in a questionable neighborhood.

Was it Souley Vegan? I was reading about it yesterday and am hoping to convince my hubby to takee me and the kiddos there sometime. It's about an hour away from us, but if it's that good, it would make a nice night out. How were the prices?

I grew up in the SF Bay Area.

Yes, Souley Vegan is the name of it. The prices were reasonable. I believe the crispy tofu dinner plate was $11 (includes two sides). It's a little hole in the wall, literally. I think there were 5 tables total. ANyway, iIt's right off Broadway, on 13th in Oakland.
