I'm making split pea soup..and all the recipes call for "1 pound of dried split peas" and I'm not sure how many cups that equals....any one know?

hm. 8 oz is a cup right? and 16 oz is a pound i think..
so two cups?
those measurements might be liquid..but..meh. its soup, so i dont think it'll wreck it if you have slightly more or less.
Think of those 1-pound bags that you typically buy beans in. Two cups or so?

That's fluid ounces. Totally different. You can't mix fluid ounces (volume) and ounces of weight.
Love,
KMK the nerd.
yeahhh...i thought so. but accurate measurements are for losers anyway :P
it varies because of the weight of a single pea.
for example;
1lb of milk can equal 4 cups (i dont really know :P) while 1lb of apples can equal 2 cups (also, just a geuss).
what you can try is to look at the whole weight of the package and measure it out that way.
16 oz. = 1 lb
these peas are just hanging out in a big old "bulk bag" in the cupboard...I think ill go with two cups??? what could go wrong...like someone said, its soup!
Just measured lentils (similar size and weight) for you on my little scale-- about 2 and 1/4 by my count.

sweet! thanx!
Holy crap. TDB-- this is brilliant!!
For liquid, "a pint is a pound, the world around."
Thanks, mom.
I know you have the answer already but this is a tool I use - http://www.onlineconversion.com/weight_volume_cooking.htm
Or I call my mum :)
Was thinking this should probably go into one of the Cooking FAQ threads. TDB, would you like to do the honors?
Or you could just put your mum's phone number up there so we can all call her with our cooking questions... either/or. ;)
