i really wanna make these! one of the reviews mentions that the proportions seem way off so i think maybe it's supposed to be be 1 1/2 cups cornmeal, i would just eyeball it till it was thick enouch to be batter that looked right.
For what it's worth, I just made these, and they were really not so great. I used 1 1/2 cups of cornmeal. Forgot flattening them with a glass, because even when you spray the bottom of the glass, they stick all over it. I ended up just flattening them out with my fingers. They needed to be cooked closer to 20 minutes than to 12, and they weren't salty enough.
It made 63 chips.
My step-son didn't like them at all. My husband said they would be alright if he were starving but he wouldn't go out of his way to eat them. I thought they were okay-ish, but I like polenta and fried mush and the like, and this reminded me of that more than a corn chip. I'll make a pot of chili tomorrow and serve them with that so as not to waste them, but I won't make these again.
hmm, yeah they seemed like the salt was pretty low.. i bet with some tweaking and seasoning these could be really good. thanks for the info amorsalado!
When I make polenta the proportions of cornmeal to water are similar. As you are boiling it it gets very thick..and if you let it sit it gets even thicker. :shrugs: I haven't made these though. Aren't fritos fried?
yeah i think so... which is the reason why i never buy them even though theyre vegan. id love to have a healthier baked version..
This article and the recipe confused me. Aren't masa (the stuff described in the story) and cornmeal (what you use in the recipe) two different things? I know I"ve tried at least one recipe (tomalito--that sweet-ish corn stuff that you get non-vegan at Chevy's) that called for both. Also, I would never use cornmeal to make tortillas--but you do use masa for that purpose.
This recipe does look good and super easy too!

I was wondering the same thing. Aren't tortilla chips and fritos made witth masa harina? That's definitely different than corn meal. Either way, I gotta try them! Fryless fritos! Woohoo! :)
