Help! Puffy tofu!

If the wrapper on vacuum-sealed, water-packed firm tofu became puffed up... three weeks before its due-by date... would you consider it safe to use? or has it gone off? :o  :(

did you freeze it?

is it stinky?

Nope, I've never tried freezing tofu.

Let me go check if it's stinky... one moment... BLEARGH!!

LOL, I guess I could have opened it first and not have had to ask!  ;D ;D  Sorry to trouble you.  ;)

Damn - I can't even take it back to the store for a refund (lost receipt).  >:(

Even if you don't take it back, call them and let them know.  They still have that batch on the shelves.

I bought soy milk that was 4 MONTHS past the expiration date, took a big chug and realized that something was way wrong.  when I took it back to the store the lady said " well what do you want me to do about it" all snarky and unhelpfull, and I said " pull it from your shelf so that no one gets really sick"  and she just stared at me like I was crazy.

And just so that I am a little more on topic, typically when things puff up it is because bacteria are producing gas, so I would tend to avoid anything "puffy", although do you really want to take food safety advice from someone who bought soy milk that was practically from the Reagan administration?  ewwwww, now I feel sick

I just got back from the stoopermarket - they let me exchange it, so I chose one from the back of the shelf. Same date on it, but it looks much better. Still, the bad one looked fine when I bought it on Friday..... I'll have to use the new one soon! 'm thinking of trying that spinach-broccoli tofu pie thingy. I'm pretty new to this stuff ('the dreaded tofudebeest').  ;D

It's a pity; customers shouldn't have to check expiry dates on most products before they buy them, but smart customers do anyway, right? and nice customers like us tell the shop to check the rest if one is off / past it... however, as hibiscus said, we usually get grumped at for trying to help. *sigh*

Anytime this has happened to me, no matter what the date, it has been bad. REAL bad. :P

I'll admit to being anal retentive and checking the dates on all my food at the store.  I've done it ever since I got food poisoning several years back.

Nothing like throwing up until you're inside out to remind you to check dates, eh?  ;)
Fortunately I've never had food poisoning myself... *crosses fingers, touches wood and sticks a needle in eye*
