Sooooo, I bought 2 packages of tempeh the other day. They're vacuum sealed. Haven't opened either, but I plan to, to make some tempeh bacon. I just noticed that one of the packages is kinda puffy, and has lost it's "seal". The other is still fine. Do I throw it away?? Do I still use it? And honestly, since it's already moldy...how on Earth do you know when tempeh has gone bad!? Thanks for the help vegwebbers, I know I can count on you!! ;)b
Hmmm, I've never had that. To me, puffy always equals bacterial growth equals possible food poisoning. I'd probably toss it. And if they are the same batch, I'd probably toss both. Though it would pain me to no end. :-\ :'(
I don't know about yours--but the kind I buy (from whole foods) is double wrapped--it's vacuumed sealed then wraped in a second plastic packaging--I would open up the first part and inspect the second seal--if that one is broken I would return it for a new one :) hope that helped :)
I think I might throw away the puffy one... only because I tend to overbuy (I've moved back close to mom and sometimes I don't eat at home as much as I expect) and it DOES puff the package when it goes bad. Bad tempeh is tricky because it looks bad pretty much all the time. If it is pinkish, DEFINITELY throw it out. Black spots might/might not be okay.
Could you bring it back to the store to exchange it? (That's the frugal part of me coming out) It seems like such a waste to just toss it, and if there's something wrong with that batch, somebody should know about it.

Oh, duh! Bring it back!
Is this the same that you bought a little while ago, or is it new? I don't think it would be 'right' to take it back..if it just hadn't been used. They would probably just have to throw it away, anyway. I know nothing about tempeh since I've never had it, but I wouldn't think it would be the right thing to do to take it back, if you have had it for a while.

True that.
pink said she got it "the other day" so..
i would bring the puffy one back. ive had tempeh sitting around for awhile before and never had that happen, but my soy products (milk, tofu) will get puffy when its getting ancient.
if you know you arent going to eat it any time soon, you can just throw it wrapped in the freezer.
Tempeh always looks puffy and gross to me.
