Food Only a Vegetarian would eat...........

So I was having lunch with a meat-eating coworker, and brought out my "snobby joe" sandwich. It's in Veganomicon but basically is a sloppy joe made out of lentils. I loved it, she said "what the heck is that....".......and I proceeded to explain, and she didn't warm up to the idea at all, and then I said "chalk this up to one of those things only a vegetarian would eat". ;D
Sometimes there are foods I think that only I can eat, and I shouldn't share with others. My kale-brussel sprout-seitan dish over quinoa is one of those two.
What's things do you eat, that you'd only share with a fellow vegan?
Kinda related: I tend not to tell people that I've used flax as an egg replacer unless they ask. Because every time I say that flax can be used in this way, people are like, "OMG GROSSSSS!" As if you can taste the flax seeds or something! Call me crazy, but the goo that just popped out of that chicken's vagina sounds a bit grosser to me than a bunch of ground up seeds.
Yes, it kills me that in a weightloss group I am/was in on Yahoo (I say "am/was" because it seems to be pretty much dead in the water), they tell you to eat 3 Tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily "for health". But if you mention using flax instead of eggs you get: "Oh gross! that doesn't work! It won't be the same at all!" HUH?? ???
I put cilantro in everything. I even eat sprigs of it while I'm cooking.
I'm planning a trip to an Asian grocery store now! I think I know of one not too far away!
One of my fav breakfasts is a tofu scramble with nut yeast sauce & spinach & mushrooms in it.... I've tried getting Smooch & my sister both to try it numerous times & they act like I'm nuts. I don't understand it, tofu is the perfect sub for scrambled eggs!

I do actually taste flax in things and I'm not crazy for it :-[ Thank goodness for flax oil supplements in vegetarian gelcaps!
That said, I LOVE vegan baking with other replacements :)

oboy, look what I started.... ;D
I would generally say nut yeast is not for non-veg*ns BUT I hve become so addicted to it that my meat eating booyfriend will now request my feese (fake cheese) sauces. He also really likes my nut yeast & tofu scrambles, which I think lots of non-veg*ns would not like.
I've trained him well!
My husband (an omnivore) is also a fan of nutritional yeast. In fact, the first time he tried cheez sauce, he said "That nutritional yeast is amazing stuff, huh?" He already liked my yeast gravy way better than meat gravy. And I never had to acquire a taste for it; I've liked it from the first time I tried it.
I'm a vegetarian and I HATE cilantro with a passion, ugh, and down here in Texas cilantro is in EVERYTHING. I used to love mexican food until I moved down here, now I hate it. Everytime I even look at a mexican restaurant I get nauseated. Uuuuugggghhh cilantro, yuk! In recipies that call for it, I use parsley instead, seems to always come out okay, just keep the cilantro far far away from me, even the smell of it makes me gag!
I believe I hate parsley just a tad less than you hate cilantro. :P ::) The I Hate Cilantro website is funneh! >:D
I don't like to think about 'food only a vegetarian would eat..' b/c I like to think that there aren't any. Just different people liking different things..(veg*n or not..) ???
This makes me think of (several weeks ago) when I was still working on the checkouts, packing people's groceries... I'd see people buying tofu, and my eyes/ears would perk up. Then I'd see them also buying raw meat/ham/dairy/eggs and so on, and think to myself, 'Whuh?' So I guess some people choose to eat tofu (and other soy products) because cookbooks/magazines/TV/radio/whatever told them it's healthy (cholesterol free!)... not because they care one whit about animals. ::)
Cilantro. Ew.
Cilantro! (akshully: coriander!)... :)>>> :)>>> :)>>> :)>>> :)>>>

My parents (Dad in particular) are interested in nooch 'uncheese' sauce. Partly because the price of dairy is skyrocketing lately. If I can make a dependable, tasty uncheese recipe for Dad he says he'd enjoy that on pizza instead of cheese. Sweeeet! Only I've been a bit confused with my uncheese lately. I accidentally made a super duper tasty, literally, unbelievably CHEESY sauce a couple of weeks ago, and have yet to replicate it. I think it was because I sort of toasted the nooch in hot oil before I added the (un)milk and thickener (mainly arrowroot). *scratches head* If I figure out the secret of my miraculous cheesy uncheese, I'll be sure to let you know. :-\
My family is not veg*n. They eat many, many veg meals but they also eat meat and eggs. So when I do the grocery shopping I also buy meats and eggs (not much dairy because of lactose intolerance) along with tofu, soymilk and whatever other "veg" foods that we/I eat. I have been veg*n for many, many years but cannot convince them. So I just settle for the fact that they eat far more really healthy things than the average non-veg*n person.
They also looooove nooch, especially on popcorn. ;)b

Yeah, that just reiterates the fact that one can't judge any situation! There are so many different circumstances...that another person can just never know what the exact situation is...unless he/she was to ask! I think some non-veg*ns might also just like tofu? I'm sure some do.
Yeah, all of my meat eater friends like tofu.
and just for the record, i LOVE cilantro. love it. :)>>> :)>>> :)>>>
Ditto!! Esp. in guacamole, yummmmmm...
and I don't know if anyone has said egg replacer...and perhaps quinoa. I loves me the quinoa and I've noticed many of you do too! ;)b
I had avocado on toast today for lunch. I don't know how many non-veg*ns would eat that...

Aye, I try not to judge. It wouldn't make sense or be fair to judge, with so little information (talkin bout strangers I mean). But I am hella curious sometimes. :smirk:

Fair enough. The thead is more tongue-in-cheek than separatist, but let's face it you don't see many non-vegetarians going throught the trouble of making tempeh bacon or tofu chimichangas. ;D
Then again, I was having coffee with friends after a meeting and the guy next to me was talking about making black bean burgers. I told him "you know you can use wheat gluten instead of eggs to bind them together and you can find whole wheat bread crumbs at a health food store"..........and I got a dull "huh?". LOL....but black bean burgers are a start! ::)

Oh, honey, a good black bean burger can do a LOT for veg*nism!! (Of course you know I had to put that in!)
I wish I had my own plastic, I would send away for a T-shirt that says "Black Bean Babe" or some such thing on it!

O.K., I feel REALLY stupid now, LOL! When I first read nut yeast, I was trying to figure out what the heck kind of yeast came from nuts...then it dawned on me that it was referring to nutrional yeast, LOL! :-D

And I could be your "Black Bean Boy"....Interesting enough I've never even heard of black beans until I moved to Florida. I'd always had pinto beans, because my dad hailed from Texas. But here inflused by Cubans I discovered black beans and have made burgers, stews, chili, salads, and 1001 different black bean dishes. :)>>>
I've got it Tweety, for me anyway! "Queen Black Bean!" And you can be my King! :-* :-*
