Take fig out of container/package. Take bite. Chew. Roll eyes back in head for sheer joy.

  This recipe never misses.

I should know this being from CA... but are figs and dates the same thing?
If so, Ani's Raw Donut Holes! MMMMMM!

My in-laws have a very productive fig tree.  We always get bags and bags of them when it is fruiting.  We eat as much as we can fresh (yumm!) and on salads, dry some in my dehydrator, and usually cut the rest in half and freeze for smoothies. I've made various tarts and put them into muffins, but I really do prefer them fresh.

This thread really got me thinking that I should take better advantage of my fig luckiness and try actual recipes.  30 seconds on google came across this site (with an actual "vegan" section...albeit only three recipes---but they sound good!):

The black beans with figs and bell peppers sounds really good...now I wish the fig tree was in season right now.

on the site they also have directions on how to use figs to replace fats in baking.  so, you could make like fig chocolate chip cookies or something...

TMI warning:

That's how I start out but I've eaten enough to give myself the runs :-[ .  I still have a couple of pints so I was looking for something new.

I have also roasted them and they were yummy. Maybe I'll try a tart. Thanks everyone.

Yep...thats it...except once I lived in this magical place while I was in college where there was a fig tree out back of a house I rented and I would pick colanders full, eat some, blanch and freeze some...mmmm...ahh the memories.  No matter how many packages I buy, nothing compares to that...heaven.

well, it wasn't exactly like that. with figs, there is some kind of bug that helps pollinate them or something like that. i wish i had the skills to find old threads... it's really cool but now whenever i see them that is all i can think about.

what does a fresh fig taste like? the bug thread got me all sketched out but i may reconsider. i've had fig newtons back in the day... soo...???

Fresh figs are so delicious.  You should give them another try

Figs trees and fig wasps have one of the most amazing relationships that I know of.  Here is a website that is really fun to learn about this (specifically look at fig-wasp fig-tree mutualism and how fig trees are pollinated)

http://www.figweb.org/Figs_and_fig_wasps/index.htm

And for anyone with an hour to kill, I highly recommend watching the facinating Nature piece about a fig tree in Africa (it is considered a "keystone species" in many environments) and everything that goes around it, including the fig tree-wasp relationship (it is posted in 10 separate "chunks" on youtube). Here is the first "chunk."

Yes, when you eat figs, you probably will be eating dead wasps--but these wasps are not killed as a result of human exploitation.  They are dead there in the figs after having fulfilled their purpose in life.

I always pull mine open to look for critters and have never seen one. Maybe it has already decomposed :o but I don't care they are that good :)

I've seen that piece about the fig trees and it was really well done.
