Hi, everyone! Just a question...I'm from Mexico and English is my second language, so I don't really understand what corn meal is. I'm guessing is like corn flour but I'm not sure...anyone can help me? :-\ Thanks a lot!
Oh! I just remembered! I also have problems transalating and finding nutritional yeast. Help? Anyone? Thanks! ::)

Hi Cristybel,
Corn meal is ground corn. It is granular with a texture similar to sand, salt, sugar, etc... It is often used in addition to flour in breads or chips, tortillas, etc....
Here is a more detailed link with pictures.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornmeal
Hay dos clases: el mas fino, como Maseca, y el más gordo, que en America se usa para hacer panes etc. Luego están los "grits" que es semola muy gorda.
Vale? ;)
To all English speakers: Just using Spanish terminology to differentiate between fine, tortilla/arepa type flour, coarse for corn bread, and "grits."
Tambien hay maizena, que es mas finita que maseca. En recetas de Inglaterra, muchas veces maizena se llama "corn flour." ;)
???
What is funny is when I first moved here to Houston I was told by several people that I would pick up at least a little bit if spanish living here since there is such a strong Mexican influence.
I have lived here almost a year and a half and I haven't learned a single new spanish word. http://planetsmilies.net/happy-smiley-665.gif

Y en EE UU Maicena es "cornstarch." Solo sirve para espesar salsas y eso.
Thanks a lot to everybody! Muchas gracias! So, in other words, I can use cornstarch and cornmeal indistinctly?
This is very helpful, really! :)>>>
Bay puppy, thanks! I just got it! Now I know what cornmeal ism, thanks! :-D It was so easy...Cornmeal is what we know in Mexico as "masa" but dry, that is, before it is ready to make tortillas. :P Thanks a lot
YES! Masa! ;)b Oh, I kept thinking of how I could reply to this thread, but couldn't think of the right way to describe cornmeal. I forgot the word "masa!" But yes. I'm pretty sure that is the same thing as cornmeal.
Cristybel, I know that if you actually bought some of each (cornmeal, corn flour and corn starch, and don't forget the grits!), and looked at them, you would see the difference. They are each useful, but NOT interchangeable!!
