I'm excited to see what else Isa can cook up!

AH HA! So hers is "image of the law of a VEGAN" ...I like it now. Doof... wow I feel really uneducated.
um-thats incredible that you figured that out...says quite the opposite of "uneducated" to me...I like the title too now, by the way.
Well, I would say I 'figured it out'... just read on wikipedia what the original title meant and hit myself in the head. Now it's one of those "I'll remember it forever" things... and now I feel I should read Necronomicon to make amends with logic...
I'd also recommend watching Sam Raimi's (of 'Spider Man' directing fame) 'Evil Dead' Trilogy (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and Army Of Darkness). The first one is straight up scary, but the next two use a lot of comedy, and they don't have to be watched in order. Aside from Lovecraft, it's the next biggest user of the term (borrowed from Lovecraft of course) 'Necronomicon.
As it's usually potrayed, the Necronomicon is a book of forbidden knowledge, secrets long lost yet essential to the workings of the universe. Revelations about the true nature of good, evil, time space and what lies beyond. To know is insanity.
So basically, we're getting vegan recipes that you'll be crazy about. :D
"Aaah! Why have you disturbed our sleep; awakened us from our ancient slumber? You will die! Like the others before you, one by one, we will take you."
Yes, Evil Dead! ;D
Necronomicon=The Book of the Dead. Veganomicon=The Book of the Vegan. :)

Never heard of this book or author, but the title makes me want to buy it. ;D

This is the same author that wrote Vegan With A Vengence (or VWAV as we like to write), surely if you've been here a year you've heard us rave about it. But perhaps it came out more than a year ago and you missed the love affair with this author. LOL
I'm a bit torn because she seems heavy on the sweets and baked goods and I'm not much into baking. Plus I'm in the "just what I need another cookbook" crowd. But I'll probably get it eventually. I might wait for the reviews from you guys first.

Yes, I know what you mean! My favorite recipes (by far) in VWAV were Isa's baked goods (muffins, cupcakes, cookies)... I've said this before, and I know that I'm totally in the minority, but I have yet to find an entree recipe of Isa's that I love! :-\ I love how creative & inventive she is, and I've made a bunch of recipes that I thought were pretty tasty, but compared to how long they took to prepare, I just didn't think they were worth it. And I don't think I've ever made an entree from that book more than once... I love to cook, and if something is absolutely delicious, I don't mind if it takes me awhile. But unfortunately, this hasn't been my personal experience with this book.
I use her muffin recipes all the time, but when it comes to her savory foods... I have yet to make something that was really good, and took me less than 2 hours. But I keep trying!

i was looking at their website and it looks like it will be a lot of homecookin' vegan style. i like that it isn't going to use fake cheese and meat products. makes it more whole foody sounding to me and DARN I HATE IT when i look for recipes that are all about the faux products.
Yeah!! That's why I want to buy this book, even though I am still trying to work through VWAV! I also really dislike when cookbooks use a lot of processed foods... I don't mind if vegan mayo or something is used as an ingredient, but it bugs me when faux cheeses, cream cheese, processed fake meat are the staples of the recipes! That's one great thing I can say about VWAV; I can't think of one recipe that uses any of that stuff... In fact, I think Isa writes somewhere in there that she refused to include any pre-processed "fake" foods in the book. (I use that stuff once in awhile, but when I buy a cookbook, I want to know how to make it from scratch!) :)

I made the snobby joes this weekend which was a sample from the book and it was damn good. I use her muffin recipes all the time, but when it comes to her savory foods... I have yet to make something that was really good, and took me less than 2 hours. But I keep trying!
I love the muffins! I make the poppy seed lemon muffins at least twice a month.

Howdy!
I know I'm going to want to settle down a bit later and modify this review, but I am SO into this cookbook, I had to post. I scored a copy at the Boston Vegfest (for only $25!) and even got Isa and Terry to sign it "To Dinkfeet" :-*
Anyway, it really is everything ppk.com promises it will be and more. I've read through the whole thing, and am glad it's out because let's face it: more people will like vegan food if we cook it WELL. Here's what I like:
THE STYLE. Let's face it, this is 50% of the reason we keep coming back to Isa and Terry (the other 50% is the taste). They write SO clearly, anticipate problems, explain why things work the way they do, and have 'tude with everything. There are side bars about different ingredients and substitutions and ways of cooking sprinkled next to relevant recipes.
THE SECTIONS. No! There are not a lot of desert/baked goods in here (that's for you Tweety), and only one cupcake. Of the seven pages that list the recipes in the table of contents, 1.5 are lists of baked goods/desserts. The ppk lists out the food sections, but what I'm really raving about are the instructional pieces at the beginning of the book: Stocking the Veganomicon Pantry, Kitchen Equipment, Terminology, Lower-Fat Cooking, How to cook a Vegetable/Grain/Bean. That's the first 45 pages and it's like a vegan cooking encyclopedia.
THE LEGENDS. I'm not talking about sporting heroes here, I'm talking about the little box at the bottom of a graph that tells you which colors/dots mean what. Each recipe is labeled with an icon that tells you if it's soy free, reduced fat, gluten free (yay Dragonfly!), under 45 minutes, or grocery store friendly (meaning no pomegranate syrup or goji berries).
OVERALL. It's what everyone's expecting: Incredible dishes, none appear to be super-basic, clearly explained, no analogues, educational, and a whole heck of a lot of fun. You could feed yourself for a year out of this book and learn A LOT about being a cook while doing it. It truly lives up to the title: secret all-knowing-book-ofvegan-cooking-wisdom.
Clearly they've been reading the VCTOTW and VWAV reviews here on vegweb, because this cookbook is all that and better!

I pre-ordered it from Amazon, then I heard that Barnes and Noble were shipping it way before Amazon, thought about switching, agonized that I wouldn't be able to hold it in my greedy arms as early as possible. Yhen I realized that there are so many recipes in VWAV that I have been meaning to try, that this would be a perfect time to cook like crazy, cuz once VCON comes, I am sure all other cookbooks will fall to the wayside for at least a month or two! And not that I have been neurotically checking or anything ;) but Amazon says my order will arrive on halloween. . . . treat.

I made the Smoky Pepper & Beans Gumbo this week. It was amazing. Make it every week during fall / winter / in the rain good. Since I got three last weekend I have not had a chance to read mine cover to cover but I intend to. This cookbook is so very helpful and the recipes look amazing. I even have a pic of my bowl of gumbo here. mmmmm
