Happy Vegan Chocolate Chip Cookies

What you need:

2 cups unbleached flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
cinnamon, to taste, optional
handful vegan chocolate or carob chips
1 cup raw sugar (turbinado; sucanat works too, but sucks up a lot of the moisture)
1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup water

What you do:

1. Very important-make sure all ingredients are at room temperature. It will work if they're not at room temp but it works much better if they are. Also while your oven is pre-heating put the cookie sheets you are going to use on top of the oven so they get preheated as well. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
2. In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in chips. Make a well in the center and set aside. In a medium size bowl, add together sugar and oil; mix well.
3. Add the vanilla and then add the water; mix well. Add the wet to the well in the dry. Mix it well but be careful not to overwork it. Add more chips if you need to.
4. Spoon onto ungreased cookie sheets. Put them in the oven. Bake for 5 minutes and then flip and rotate the sheets (top to bottom and 180 degree rotation). Bake another 4 minutes and check them. The cookies are done when they seem a little bit softer then you want them to be. They will harden up some as they cool. I usually go in 2 minute increments from here until they get to where I like them.
5. Take them out when they are done and move them to wire cooling racks. If they split or come apart when you try to remove them let them sit on the pan for 2 minutes before transferring them to the racks.
These cookies have come a long way, lots of time and tasting spent on getting them to where they are now. Vegans and non vegans love them. In the words of my 6 year old son:Mom, you're the greatest because you know how to make the best cookies. Enjoy and let me know if you have questions. Sweet travels.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This recipe is awesome! I have just become a vegetarian and i am working on goin vegan, eliminating something every week, and this recipe knocked my socks off! just goes to show that there is good vegan food too!
My dad thought the idea of vegan cookies were gross but he ended up loving them. My whole family noticed that they didnt feel as sick when they ate the vegan cookies compared to regular ones.
I took them to my office today and all the ladies couldn't believe how good they were!!
Thank you for this recipe!!!! :)

Delicious, simple, awesome!  I used 100% whole wheat pastry flour and about 3/4 cups worth of chocolate chips.  I also added in 1/3 cup of crushed pretzels. (Sounds weird but it's an amazing combo, trust me.) The dough seemed a little crumbly so I used an extra 1-2 tablespoons of water.  I was easily able to roll the dough into balls, then I slightly flattened them and baked on parchment paper exactly 10 minutes.  The cookies turned out excellent, they hardened right up on the outside but stayed soft and chewy on the inside.  I shared these with a group of friends who completely devoured them and raved about how good they were. Thank you for an excellent recipe!

I bought my vegan chocolate chips at Whole Foods for $3.

best cookies ever! love them with soy milk. any suggestions on where to find vegan chocolate or carob chips at a reasonable price? health food stores are kind of pricey, even the grocery store. only had one type in stock, $5 for a small bag.  :o

Yuck.  I'm sad I wasted my delicious choc chips on this recipe.

The sugar is overpowering.  Needs to be reduced, and possbly sub some brown sugar.

I used canola oil and I think this was another part of the problem I had with the recipe.  Gross.  If I were to try this recipe again, I would DEFINITELY use Earth Balance instead.

That said, I don't think I'll try it again.  The cookies came out of the oven barely cooked through and now, a day later, kept safe all night in an airtight container, they're hard as rocks.

Can someone refund my choc chips? ;)

grossest cookies I and my family have ever tasted!  A contributor could have been the carob chips that where used (which I forgot to taste beforehand) but the cookie part tasted like crap too.  The cookies came out white looking (nothing like the pictures). If I were to repeat this recipe I would use non carob chips and I would not use turbinado sugar...

I totally agree. Idk what i did wrong. Min ecame out gross :(

Super cookies.  Very impressed.  Do NOT overbake; 10 minutes and not a second longer is good for my oven.  Thanks for the great recipe!!
