Hi! Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Julia :)
What are the top most important things to have in you kitchen cupboard's for cooking healthy meals for a family? Were are you favorite places to shop for these items?
I am planning on cleaning out all food in house and starting over with the basics. Allot of boxed junk. I don't even feel it would be right to take to a food bank, but will because I know people are hungry. I am a couponer so I have allot stock piled. If I wait for it to be gone it will never happen. Thank you all so much for the great recipes. :)>>>
veggie broth/ bullion, beans (all types especially garbanzos), tortillas, nutritional yeast, braggs liquid aminos (soy sauce stuff), tofu (easy meat substitute to start off with), pasta, rice, i have a lot of frozen and canned veggies for quick fixes but fresh are always best, an endless amount of spices!!! I have TONS, and i like to have vegan boca burgers on hand for when i am too busy to cook up a meal
I feel I should start off with telling you I'm pescatarian, live alone, and I freak out when I have less than a month's worth of food in the pantry for three meals for four adults/day plus snacks. I also prefer to cook scratch/soak beans vs canned, etc, but have cheats I like to use.
For me, the super basics are:
Onions (all types, I will generally go through 5+ lbs per month)
Garlic (I get a huge tub of minced garlic, usually lasts me about a year)
Frozen broccoli and other veggies
An assortment of the various preparations for canned tomatoes.
Tomato paste
Pasta
Rice (both white and brown)
Quinoa
Spaghetti sauce
Both canned and dry beans (prefer black, garbanzos, and pintos to be cooked by me, for kidneys, and others I only occasionally use, I do canned)
Lentils
Veggie stock, both home made and store bought.
Hot sauce
Any 'alternatives' you may want (soy/rice/almond milk, margarine, etc)
AP flour
Cornmeal
Baking powder
baking soda
Sugar/sweetener of your choice
Salt
Chocolate
Peanut butter
Spices
Bread
Olive oil
Canola/corn oil
My seasonals are:
Winter/cold weather:
Potatoes
Kale
Other tubers/root veggies
Hot chilis
Summer/warm weather:
Citrus
Mint
Pickled hot veggies (for pasta salad)
My like to haves are:
Coconut milk,
WW flour
Bread flour
WW pastry flour
Cake flour
Yeast
Dried Mushrooms
Canned diced chillies
Cookies
Various canned soups
Tuber/squash puree
Canned berries/fruits
Apple sauce
Juices
Meat analogues
2-4 frozen entrees/dinners
Thank you so much for the information. Some things you two have listed I would have never thought. This has helped allot.
Ooh, Ooh, I want to join! I am also a lots-of-food person. My mother's parents were Mormon... this means, I grew up constantly having enough food in the pantry to live provide at least 6 adults all the food they could possible want for up to 2-3 months. Of course, this is toned down now that it's just the bf and I... but still.
My basics are:
Bread (I buy or make a whole bunch, and then freeze some loaves).
Vegan butter or margerine
Olives ("fresh" and canned)
Flour
Yeast
Baking Soda
Baking Powder
Sugar (powdered, granulated, and brown)
Maple syrup and/or Molassas
Spices--of all kinds. Gotta have spices.
Frozen Peas, Frozen Corn, Frozen peas-and-corn, and broccoli
Lots of Tofu (I freeze some of it)
Curry paste
Rice
Coconut Milk
Onions
Soy Milk
Cereal
Pasta
Pasta Sauce
Vegan BBQ sauce
Pad Thai Noodles, Pad Thai sauce.
Chocolate Chips
Nuts and dried fruit
Crackers
Tortillas
Condiments (mustard, ketchup, etc etc)
Beans--canned and dry.
Mmmmm, makes me want to go grocery shopping. I get to, actually! I'm going to Seattle today.... one of the first things I want to do? Visit Whole Foods and the Community Market. We don't have those out here in eastern Wash. So excited!
Vegetarian Beans: black, pinto, garbanzo, etc
Veggie broth
Bread
Olive Oil
Noodles
Tofu
Tons of fresh veggies
Tons of fresh fruit
Frozen veggies
Cereal
Canned tomatoes
Jarred mushrooms (I'm not a huge fan of them, but they come in handy)
onions
Spices
hmm!! I'm sure I'm forgetting something major.
