Is it worth it to plunk down $250+ for a KitcheanAid Mixer?

I've been interested in getting one, but the price ... is it really worth it?

It depends on how much you would use it. I have a 6qt professional machine, Reg price is over 350, but I use it atleast 3 times a week as I rarely buy store breads and cookies for my family and cook GF for myself. They are super sturdy and last forever. But if you don't use a mixer that often, there are some other stand mixers on the market for much less. I would see if you have a friend or family member who has one that you can test drive for a week. See if you will really use it, they are also big, and so you need a good space to store it and are very heavy, so you may want to keep it where you don't have to lift it.

Also, if you do decide to get one, please don't pay full price for it. I got mine for $180 because it was returned, and was a color the store didn't usually carry. Have your friends and fam keep a look out, you can find them clearanced at least 40%off in stores after the holidays, or if the color is discontinued. Craigs list is awesome too.

Thank you so much! I bake on average 2-3 times a week so I definitely would make good use of it.

It is definitely worth it in my opinion, but these things last forever, so it would be a lot cheaper to find one at a garage sale, or estate sale. I know of a few people who have done so, and for much less than half that price.

I love mine! It's amazing and I use it all the time. It makes mixing up batter and dough, whipping mashed potatoes, etc a breeze. I can't wait to get more attachments for things like making fresh pasta. I agree, though, that you should be able to find a used one in good shape. I got mine new and it cost more than $300, but it was a bday gift. Maybe sweet talk someone into getting you one? ;)

I say go for it! My friend found mine at an estate yard sale. It was in "mixed box" that he got for like $25. It was free to me. Awesome. Look around at yard sales and check out department store ads. They run specials on stuff like that around the holidays. I know my dad got my mom's for around half price. It's definitely worth it.

totally worth it... great for seitan making.
THIS
Seriously, I always thought homemade seitan was a bit reminiscent of dense, savory bread until I started using my stand mixer. Something that the dough hook does makes it incredible. I just simmer "cutlets" in well-seasoned, shallow broth in a skillet and my omni friends go nuts for it...but it's not my cooking skills, it's the stand mixer! It's a miracle of gastronomy.

Thank you very much for your advice and tips to find one cheaper. I APpreciate the link faunablues on that sale on Amazon. I was so tempted and am trying to be good about money, especially with the holidays approaching. Sorry I missed that one day sale(my stupid computer was down) and will keep hunting for a good deal.
I didn't think about the possibilities making mashed potatoes, homeade seitan, bread ... with a KitchenAid mixer. I was just thinking about all the cookies I could make so fast.

Yes! But look at Craigslist, Garage sales, shopgoodwill.com before commiting to that price. People are always parting with their old kitchen appliances.

Thanks for the good advice. Saw when on Craigslist but I think it might be sold because I didn't get a response back. Those coupons are a great idea. I'm hoping prices come down because of the holidays.

Amazon's having a one-day sale today on a Kitchenaid stand mixer: http://www.amazon.com/gp/goldbox/ref=pe_36550_13524530_pe_00_head
