Barbara's Mashed Potatoes

Have you ever had these? THey are SOOO awesome, and the sad part is, they are now discontinued.  :'(
I know, I know, I should be making my own, and I do with most things, but THESE.....well, I just have to say I liked them better than homemade, and they only took 5 minutes to make. Great for after work when you don't feel like cooking. Plus, none of the questionable ingredients like Hungry Jack or whatever.

Does anyone know of another vegan instant mashed potato that doesn't have preservatives, etc....that I could replace my loving Barbara with???  I bought out the HFS and have  a few boxes left, but when these are gone..... :-\ :'( :-\ :'(

You could try writing Barbara's and asking them to recontinue. Enough people did that with Fantastic Foods' Tofu Scrambler that they brought it back!

EDIT: of course, if anyone has suggestions for other mashed potatoes, they should also post them in the Product Review section so that you already would have found out what's there!

I actually already did that and received a very nice reply saying that sales weren't good and that they were having production problems. If I find another, I will put it in the product reviews, I promise Dink!!!  :D

Bummer, well, you could create a bunch of fake email addresses and keep writing them. Also, if you ask your local HFS to carry it, that's another inquiry.

Good luck!

I've never had them. There are no easy, good ingredient, mashed potatoes where I live. If there were, I would probably buy them!

OK good! I was looking for someone to feel the pain with me!  :-[
My HFS friend in florida got about 8 boxes for me but he's really bad at mailing things. I feel like Elaine Benis buying up the last boxes of the sponge.

no, i'm really serious! i love those fucking things!

so does DR. and they are the only ones without "funky shit" in them. grrr.

they were good to eat. and to thicken soup. and  :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( i really am sad.

I haven't had instant mashed potatoes in forever, but I prefer them over homemade...are most kinds not vegan?

I need to know because I've got massive amounts of gravy coming my way

I found out idaho has some organic ones:

http://www.truefoodsmarket.com/product_info.php/products_id/1595

it has mono dygycerides (veg. source) is this bad?  I don't trust 'em

Also, I think Bob's Red Mill has some!  I like that brand but haven't found out whats in them yet.

See Fee, that's the problem. Barbara's was the ONLY good source for scrumptious vegan instant MPs. The other brands have crap in them. OH, and the think the Bob's redmill are a thing of the past too.  :'(
I cannot imagine why anyone would have massive amounts of gravy coming her way, but I bet its interesting!

This is the HUGEST shot in the dark ever, but do you think you could make your own instant mashed potatoes? Make some mashed potatoes and keep them plain and then dehydrate them so they can easily be reconstituted? It wouldn't replace the Barbara's, but it might be something you could do on a free afternoon to have convenient instant potatoes ready for later?

Again, I have no idea if that would work, but supposedly they're just dehydrated anyway, so I imagine it could?

Wow, dehydrating mashed potatoes sounds messy!  I wonder if it would work?

Ooooh!  Great suggestion!  I love dehydrating things.  I'm totally gonna try this!  (I'm making homemade mashes right now, btw).

I made homemade mashed potatoes today for lunch. :DDD

I'm so glad someone took that bait! I've never dehydrated anything myself (one day, one day!), but think this make a great pantry staple--if it worked! You'll have to let all of us know!

I think the best way to do the dehydrated approach would be to simply grate the potatoes onto cheese cloth (maybe sprinkle some garlic powder on them?), spread them out evenly and then let the dehydrator do it's thing!! You then would add all the other things upon rehydration.... Dammit!!! You guys are making me even more homesick!!! I have a new dehydrator I have yet to get out of the box and about 8 pounds of yukon gold potatoes that need to be used up....BUT I'm visiting family 'till Monday, and there's no dehydrator here to play with!!!

i thiought, though, that there was "potato flakes" available in bulk foods? its been awhile since ive looked for them, so i dont know if this  is still true.

this is so depressing. ....

maybe a petition online is in order????  ???

Haha. Are you kidding me?  I haven't done them yet.  :busted:  That would require work (that isn't at my job) and that only happens on the weekends.  I will try to remember to do it this weekend.

Does it have seasoning in it?  My HFS carries bulk instant potato flakes that are just potato flakes.  Could you get something like that and add stuff to the flake base?

Nope, no seasoning. I never thought to look in bulk, but now I will! Thanks!!! ;)b

I've seen dehydrated potato slices at the bulk food store. never really considered what you could do with them...

to be honest, potatoes (in general - other than sweet) are not that appealing to me. I try, but I just can't decide if I like them or not.
