Blendtec Total Blender vs Vita-mix
So I killed my rinkydink food processor mashing dates for my larabars. I figure it's about time I'm gonna get me a fancypants blender like I always wanted. But... which?
Does anyone have a Blendtec Total Blender? It's supposedly more powerful than the vita-mix... but there's no tamper, and it also just doesn't have as much word-of-mouth support as the vita-mix. Also it's considerably lighter than the vita-mix, and that makes me suspicious. However, the Will It Blend? series (http://www.willitblend.com/) is genius. And the Blendtec claims to be able to make flours and bread in the same container as it does everything else, whereas the vita-mix needs a special dry container.
On the vita-mix side, does anyone have any thoughts about whether the models are really substantively different? Is a 4500 really not as cool as a 5000? I've read what vita-mix has to say about the differences, but I'd love to hear opinions about it.
Those are the specific issues that are keeping me up at night, but any thoughts on blenderdom are appreciated here.

I have a vitamix 5000 ( have had it for about 9 years now) and love it. I find the tamper to be absolutely necessary. I have no complaints.
I must say however, that the blendtec is a much cooler looking machine.
I love my VitaMix and would have been lost last week without it. I think I ran it like a dozen times! Of course I also busted out the Food Processor and the Kitchen Aid Mixer but I am a gadget queen!
I would seriously look at the 5200 out now with the comfort grip handle. That would be my only complaint is that the handle can cut into my hands if its full of hummus and I have to scrape it out for 30 minutes.
Never heard or tried of a BlendTec or the Willitblend. Sorry.
Oh one more side note about my VitaMix fanaticism. I promised my daughter one when she graduates High School. How is that for enabling? hahaha
the thing i don't like about vita mix is the poly containers. i prefer glass cause i'm crazy. but, in the raw things i read, nothing is "safe" for foods. i should just gnaw on the trees. ???
i love the willitblend videos. i've annoyed my officemates for hours with them (well, not hours, perhaps a few minutes a couple months ago, but they're okay with my "cooking madness" as long as i bring them cupcakes/cookies/muffins/etc). not sure what the container is made out of. i would have to check again.
The Blendtec website says the container is made from a "virtually unbreakable" polycarbonate

I'm curious, Cali... when you use your food processor, why do you use it rather than the vita-mix?
Baypuppy hit it exactly. I prefer to do my big chopping in my 10cup food processor. That way I don't end up with onion juicy pulp rather than diced onion. Plus slicing, shredding and not having your berry smoothie smell of garlic is a good good thing.

I'm reviving this old thread because I can't decide between a Blendtec or a Vita-mix blender.
I would be using it for smoothies, frappucinos, pureeing soups and possibly grinding brown rice to create my own brown rice flour to bake with.
Which would be better for this-Blendtec or Vita-mix? And which model?
