Although some or perhaps all of the monies for this program come from the cattle industry, the federal government is the sponsor and overseer of this program. ???
Lovely!
"it is declared to be the policy of Congress
that it is in the public interest to authorize the
establishment, through the exercise of the powers
provided herein, of an orderly procedure for financing
(through assessments on all cattle sold in the United
States and on cattle, beef, and beef products imported
into the United States) and carrying out a coordinated
program of promotion and research designed to strengthen
the beef industry's position in the marketplace"
I think I'm gonna have to.....disgree with you there......
How is this even legal?
WHOAH! im gonna copy my own highlights.
1) beef and beef products are basic foods that are
a valuable part of human diet;
3) beef and beef products should be readily available
and marketed efficiently to ensure that the people
of the United States receive adequate nourishment;
hmmmmm. it does say that this was written in 1985. was there anything in there that states how this has changed since then? i cant understand all the hoobly goop talk.. and i have a headache.
I like how there is something like this written for beef but not, say, health care or adequate education. Glad our priorities are straight. Go beef.
I'm afraid this is still good law. I encountered it because I was reading a Supreme Court decision from the 2004 term supporting it.
This is the source of ads like "Beef - it's what's for dinner" - you know, the beef council ads you see in magazines. They're government supported.
Oh yeah. It's not even new. I grew up in Iowa and remember seeing "May is PORK month!" posters in the supermarkets in the mid 60s when I was just a tiny lil shroom, hardly more'n a spore.
I believe July was Beef Month. I don't remember a "Chicken Month", though.
Nothing new under the protectionist sun.
