What DVD are you watching lately?

I have BBC's Persuasion on, but I can't really get into. I've heard thought that BBC's Sense & Sensibility is good. Of course I"ve watched the Ang Lee Emma Thompson version which is superb... I may get it this week to see  :P

I love that show and I'd like to live there, I think. I'm playing around with Season 3 I think it is--where Chris flings the piano instead of the cow.

Ah yes, Maggie's piano from the house her mother burned down. Way better than flinging a cow. I just finished the episode where the former Russian KGB agent shows up in town with Maurice's dossier and the health inspector shows up at The Brick and gets on Holling's bad side with his assessment.

The final installment of "The Hollow Crown" which was Henry V. Starting with his funeral really didn't set a good tone for the movie. and it was too PC for words. A black Duke of York? Really? And they cut out the argument between the Irish, Welsh and Scots commanders because it's not PC, even though it would still be applicable and funny today.

Also tried to watch The Girl With the Pearl Earring. I love Vermeer but after 45 min of "significant glances", unsympathetic characters and no action at all, I had had enough. I got the feeling Ms Johannson had seen "Brodeuses" and was doing Lola Naymark...but she overdid the farouche bit. I thought it was just me until I realised how restless DH was. He will sometimes finish watching a film I veto, but this one was just not for either one of us. Pity, because it could have been interesting. Visuals just won't do it--gotta be some content somewhere. I'd have gotten farther just buying a coffee table book of his paintings.

Today I put on Ralph Fiennes' "Coriolanus." Excellent performances! The beginning is very much Shakespeare Meets Action Film--very in yo face. The modern take on it is excellent and makes it go very fast. To me the mark of a good production is that the actors make Elisabethan English sound normal; they themselves believe what they are saying. This one does that. I never expected to have adrenaline surges with this play, which I hated when I read it.

I know what you mean...he simply isn't a sympathetic character. I will warn you, there's some violent stuff in here, but they cut the text pretty effectively. Fiennes was interested in telling the story, not just conserving the words. Vanessa Redgrave was excellent as Volumnia, C's mother, the she-wolf that whelped the dragon.

Today and yesterday, the 3-hr miniseries of Sense and Sensibility. Andrew Davies should be ashamed. I hope he got "permission to quote" from Emma Thompson's 1995 screenplay because he lifts so many lines, let alone camera angles and whole scenes, from Ang Lee's film that more than cannibalising it,  it's plagiarism.

Mind you, pirated plays are in the best traditions of English Literature until Dickens and Poe got together and fought for the copyright in the 19th century. But still.

Sadly, I have to wait a year to watch season 3.  I don't have cable or even regular TV so I have to wait for things to come out on DVD. (Funny, I had just finished rewatching Firefly last week.)

Watching "Killer at Large" tonight.

yea I saw Titus recently as well, weird weird weird movie. It was visually interesting, but I'm not sure I'd want to watch it again.

Watching Sons of Anarchy now - really good show especially for people looking for something new to watch while waiting for Mad Men, Breaking Bad to come back.

Mriki, I hear you. And I will confess, I never actually finished Titus. I will keep the film because I tutor Eng Lit and we might need it but I had forgotten how much gore goes on in the play.Ugh. NMSOT (Not My Sort of Thing).
