Vegan Males -SOY- and Breasts!

I would love to hear from the vegan males on this board.  A friend of mine claims that she knew a lot of vegan guys (I don't even believe this much) in her old town that started to develop breasts. She went on and on about a lot of other things, but that is the short of it. First of all...who knows A LOT of vegan guys? She isn't even veg herself!

Then, my DH asks me tonight if I have heard about it being dangerous for males to drink soy milk for this same reason. Apparently his sister has a male vegan friend (whom has NEVER been talked about before, which I find strange since she knows I am vegan. You'd think she would have mentioned it) stopped drinking soymilk because he developed breasts.

I really think both of these girls have imaginary male friends with breasts but use them as examples just to make their stories more believable.

ANYWAY....do any of you vegan guys have breasts? Don't be afraid to say so....but I doubt any of you do. OR, does anyone know of any guys who drink soymilk and have breasts?

Sorry....I really don't believe this but want more info. thanks! :D

Oh, and my DH"s funny response was that he feels gyped (sp?) because he didn't get breasts and he wanted them so he could pleasure himself and not have to bother me!  ;D ;D :-D  He had already switched to rice milk before this big news story !!!

Regarding Testosterone:

I have no evidence or research to back this up, but it just sort of dawned on me.

Perhaps it is eating animal products that RAISES testosterone levels. Wouldn't eating the flesh of a male animal (steer?) mean that you are ingesting its testosterone? I don't know if testosterone flows freely around the muscles, but I would think so (any medical people out there?). I know adrenaline does.

It seems like there would be no way to prove what the normal amount is supposed to be....if you do eat animal products, your level is raised from ingesting extra from the animal (in my theory). If you don't eat animal products, your level would not be as high as a meat eater's. Maybe the veg-level is the norm.
At any rate, I would rather my son/husband be Bob Barker than Mike Tyson.

Maybe he's one of the authors of Eat Right for your Blood Type.  ::)  >:( Idiot.

Haha! I read that book when I was 13 because I read about in one of my mom's woman's magazines (like "Ladies Home Journal" or something), and I thought it sounded interesting... Even then, I was knew it was crap. That book was not based on ANY evidence, yet some people still try to follow it... Crazy.

Regarding the topic, I just wanted to add that my boyfriend has been vegan for about a year-and-a-half, and he has no boobs whatever. :)

Thats true....Soy contains phytoestrogens and they are potent anit-thyroid agents....Infants that are fed exclusively on a soy based formula have 13,000 to 22,000 times more estrogen in their blod than babies fed  a milk based formula....dont get me wrong all formulas are bad....It's the eqo uivelent of atleast five birth control pills per day.....This can cuas early puberty  in girls, thyroid issues, breast in males, and death. In 2007, two parents were convicted of murder and given life sentences in prison for starving their 6 week old baby by feeding him soy and apple juice. Soy blocks the absorbtion of nutrients. Only properly fermented soy produand tempeh, provide soy nutrients that can easily be absorbed. To make soy products nutrititious and healthy, they must be carefully fermented according to the traditional preparation methods used in Japan. Typically soy is fermented for at least two summers before it becomes beneficial for the body….Despite all the scientific evidence the soy industry still markets this unfermented and usually genetically modified soy as a super health food when it is just the opposite.

Where are you getting your information?  I don't think processed soy is the healthiest thing in the world (duh), but I don't think it causes DEATH like you state.  That's simply false & sounds like propaganda from the dairy industry.

Also, I went through early puberty (I had small breasts by the time I was 8, and I got my period when I was 10 years old), and had never had a glass of soymilk in my life nor was I fed on soy formula (breastfed).  My grandma (who was born in the '30s) also went through early puberty, and surely she didn't grow up on soy.  Likewise, I have several friends who were lactose intolerant & were fed soy formula (as their mothers couldn't produce enough breast milk to keep them satisfied), and they didn't go through early puberty whatsoever, and show no negative effects now.

Again, I'm not an advocate for soy or anything, but your claims are quite extreme...

P.S. Those parents who starved their baby to death by feeding him only soymilk & apple juice were just batshit crazy - and obviously cruel.  That wasn't the soy's fault because it didn't allow the baby to absorb nutrients; it was the parents' fault because they weren't feeding the baby any nutrients to speak of!  All soymilk cartons say right on the package that it's NOT to be used as infant formula.

Well i can only provide you with informtion...its for you to determine if you believe it or not.... I would also note that different people deal with carcinogens differently than others depending on genetics passed on to them....I would reccommend that you look into fermented soy versus non fermented soy....also you will find that atleast 80% of the worlds soy is now being grown genetically modified....Keep in mind that the Soy Industry is an industry just like the Diary industry both are corrupt and both have serious effects on the body.Dairy/Soy users aren't just dropping dead but no one with an open mind looking for truth can deny that both are harmful to humans and over time will cause serious problems from thyroid issues, hormonal embalances as soy is bassically 100% estrogen and we know what this does to the risk of breast cancer in women...l....Dairy and Soy  cause early puberty and that is so common I doubt that any child drinking dairy or soy don't go through early puberty they both cause it for different reasons however.....If you understand that drinking Milk can cause a deficiency in calcium, although it's high in calcium you should be able to understand that eating or drinking soy that has not been fermented can cause deficiencies much the same....Rice milk is a much healthier alternative and for infants there is no real healthy alternative to breast milk...

Yeah, I know you "can only provide with information" - but you can't just spout claims like this without backing them up.  You "learned" this stuff somewhere, and I'm wondering where.

Like I said, I'm not an advocate for soy.  Personally, I no longer drink soymilk because it's hard for my body to digest, and when I consume any soy, it's organic & fermented (like tofu & tempeh).  Of course the soy industry is an industry similar to dairy; many companies are unethical in their farming methods & produce genetically modified soy.  That I don't support.  But again, when you say that soy infant formula is the equivalent to "atleast 5 birth control pills a day," you need to back that up.  I'm not taking your word for it, but if you have reliable sources to support that claim, I'd be interested to know so I can read up on it.

If you noticed I said fermented soy is not unhealthy.....on non fermented soy and we know GMOs are no good.....I don't know how to determine a reliable source other than listening to my conscience and using my common sense to determine whether or not I believe it.....I'm sure that doesn't make it reliable for you....Any source can lie and put a slant on its study to make it say one thing or another....I'll give you a list of hormones and enzyme inhibitors that unfermented soy contains and you can do research on them and see what your "reliable" source has to say about them.....Phytoestrogens:Genistein and Daidzein...It also contains Phytic Acids read up on what they do to the body....Read up on enzyme inhibitors and how they affect the body and its ability to digest....Look into Haemaggluttin and see for yourself what it does to your red blood cells....

I think the question being asked here is, can you cite any sources? Websites? Articles? Publications? Where did the information being provided come from?

All the research I've read suggests that (a) phytoestrogens do not interact with the human body the way human/animal estrogen does, (b) the amount taken in by the average person is no where near enough to have an effect anyway, and (c) the health benefits of soy are plentiful.

Most legumes have phytoestrogens, not just soy!
Foods that contain phytoestrogens:

Phytoestrogen content (µg/100g)
Flax seed 379380
Soy beans 103920
Tofu 27150.1
Soy yogurt 10275
Sesame seed 8008.1
Flax bread 7540
Multigrain bread 4798.7
Soy milk 2957.2
Hummus 993
Garlic 603.6
Mung bean sprouts 495.1
Dried apricots 444.5
Alfalfa sprouts 441.4
Dried dates 329.5
Sunflower seed 216
Chestnuts 210.2
Olive oil 180.7
Almonds 131.1
Green bean 105.8
Peanuts 34.5
Onion 32
Blueberry 17.5
Corn 9
Coffee, regular 6.3
Watermelon 2.9
Milk, cow 1.2

Boys, don't eat flax or sesame seeds either, you'll grow boobies!  *eyeroll*

Yeah, thanks, I saw that post the first time you made it.

I am familiar with haemagglutinin and enzyme inhibitors.  I guess, show me the evidence that people who drink soy milk have higher incidences of blood clots or a diminished ability to digest macronutrients, and I'll take it into consideration.

childofzion, if you'd like to further continue this discussion of comparing facts/opinions on the dangers of soy, please move to this thread Dangers of Soy I think this is more up the alley you were following!  ;)b

I think people are finding that overeating soy isn't necessarily good for men.  Here's a case I read a while back about a guy:  http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=menshealth&channel=nutrition&category=food.for.fitness&conitem=0ad3803313651210vgnvcm10000013281eac____&page=1

Problem was the guy was drinkiing 3 freakin' quarts of soy milk a day.  Please, if someone drank 3 quarts of carrot juice a day wouldn't they get sick?

Common sense should prevail.  People, especially Asians, have eaten soy safely for a long time.  I think one can eat soy without it being labeled "dangerous".  Just my opinion.

ETA:  As part of my recent checkup my doc checked my testorone level as he does with men of my age and it was completely totally normal, in the middle of the range, not even slightly low.  I've been eating soy for over 20 years.

if you drank that much carrot juice you wouldn't get sick cause it's not toxic....It's like this....If you want to test your theory then I will eat 20 apples and you take 20 tylenol and you will see you get sick or maybe worse and I will only get full....Which could cause me to feel ill but surely wouldn't die....

Not true.  Vitamin A can be toxic, and drinking 3 quarts of 100% carrot juice a day would probably eventually cause problems, perhaps insidiously but problems nonetheless.:  http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/126104-overview

What's interesting is that you don't hear much about "the dangers of carrots".

Again, common sense should prevail.  Overeating anything is going displace other necessary things, such as how Americans overeat animal products and processed foods and displace fruits and vegetables.

But yes, I would agree that some things eaten in excess, like apples, aren't necessarily "toxic".  I'm also not disagreeing that overeating soy wouldn't cause problems in certain people.
