Don't they usually have these gimmicks and then a few years later the harm they're doing comes to light?
I think vegetable oils contain a little Omega-3 and lots of Omega-6.

I believe that they do try to highlight the positive effects and hide the negative side effects. And why are they trying to genetically modify plants to produce Omega-3 instead of promoting products like flax seed oil that already contain Omega-3. Furthermore, the article mentioned something about combatting the obesity problem, which no genetically modified food is going to cure. Perhaps trying to educate citizens about healthy foods through action (such as feeding our children healthy foods in school and not having Ronald McDonald promote reading in schools and not thinking that every occasion has to involve sugar bomb parties) would be a better approach. I don't know...just some random thoughts. :)

"Adding the oil to animal feed would create omega 3-rich meat, milk and eggs.
Researchers from the EU-wide Lipgene project say such food would help tackle public health issues like obesity."
Uh, adding omega-3s to plant sources to feed to animals to make their meat, milk and eggs more "healthy" seems like it would just encourage people to eat more meat, milk, and eggs. Now, HOW exactly will eating more meat, milk, and eggs "help tackle public health issues like obesity"????????? Meat, milk, eggs = obesity
I agree, natural is better, just eat flax people!

Ugh, this reminds me of how they were going to (or have done?) splice human genes into cows to make their milk 'more digestible' to people.
I think this falls under non-vegan, since who knows what harm GE/GM crops do to the environment (one corner of the vegan triangle). >:(
And yeah... if it ain't broke, don't fix it... pick plants which already make omega 3. Nature doesn't need to be messed with to get all the nutrients humans need.
