a friend sent me that link...do you think they were serious or that they were trying to show that if it's distasteful to drink human breast milk, then shouldnt it be the same for cows? because suggesting breast milk in ice cream seems kinda out there haha.
I wouldn't put it past them to be serious. Ingrid Newkirk has said that she wants to have a barbecue of her remains when she dies.
Assuming the milk is plentiful after my baby is born, my husband and I decided that we'd give it a shot. Seriously. Just once (I think milk, human or otherwise, is not good for adult mammals to be indulging in on a regular basis). But I don't think we'd offer it to any one else. :)

In response to our letter, Ben and Jerry's issued the following statement: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child." Hey, guys, that's our point: Cow's milk is for baby cows. Sadly, it doesn't make PETA look any kookier.
wtf? I don't exactly understand what good this is supposed to do.
All wrong. All wrong, all wrong, all wrong. Ugh.
I love how consuming human milk sounds so radical, yet consuming the milk of another animal is the norm. Maybe this will make the light bulb go off in some people's heads that they shouldn't be consuming milk after infancy anyway, especially COW'S milk.

It won't though. People are just going to be like wtf? There PETA goes again..(the majority of) People are not going to stop and think, "you know what, hey..maybe I should stop consuming cow's milk, and have some human milk instead!" No. As KMK said, I don't see what they think this will accomplish. It won't.
I know it won't- I had the same "WTF?" reaction when I first read that headline yesterday. I'm just surprised they didn't suggest the obvious soy substitution first. Human milk must taste very similar to cow's milk or something..
Yeah, I think they are just being radical to be noticed. It's just not the way to go...the WRONG recognition.
It's just going to gross people out. To me, being a good activist means appealing to people on their level--allowing them to relate to your "radical" ideas by finding a place for them within the confines of what they consider "normal." I think this is simply too radical. People won't be receptive to it, they'll shut down.
I also think there is a logical flaw there. We should be selling neither bovine breastmilk nor human breastmilk. Both of them are meant for their respective infants. Is an ice cream industry fueled by human milk feasible? Absolutely not, to my knowledge. Consuming cow's milk doesn't make sense, but is consuming frozen human milk as adults any more logical? No.
It's just going to gross people out.
...and I'm one of them!

Feeling like a cow doesn't feel so great, huh?
Mmmmmmmmm, I accidentally freaked out and posted something about this on the other board because I'm dumb and don't know where to post things. Ignore it...
Anyway, if they DID make a breast milk ice cream (which I would not eat), wouldn't it technically be a violation of the vegan lifestyle since humans are mammals? (And that goes for eating Ingrid Newkirk, too.)
oops, I replied to the other thread. I hope you all don't mind if I cross-post my response here:
i discussed this ad campaign with my partner, who is an omnivore.
I asked him how it made him feel to hear that PETA was asking Ben and Jerry's to use human milk. His response was far from a positive one, and if it weren't for the fact that I am vegan and an animal-rights activist, and that he loves me, in all likelihood he would have ended up with some very unpleasant conclusions about the misogyny and misanthropy of PETA and animal activists in general. as the_starveling wrote: "Peta has the ability to make a fool of us sometimes".
It seems that PETA does not even try to stimulate serious discussion about the issues of animal exploitation; they are stuck in shock-value mode and pandering to the pornographic mass media. Even some long-term vegans have posted on this thread that the campaign confused them, and did not make the connections to exploiting female animals for THEIR breast milk - which obviously SHOULD be the point. Our interference in the sex and reproductive lives of animals, the rape and artificial insemination of cows, then tearing their children away from them and making veal out of the calves just so we can drink from their mothers' udders ... none of this is brought to the forefront, but instead a stupid media stunt which gives omnivores an EXCUSE to not even think about all of this.
So, campaigns like this leave serious activists stuck in damage-control mode: even though my partner is not going to conclude that all activists are crazy and stupid, I was absolutely unable to get into some of the SERIOUS issues around dairy consumption which the ice cream issue raised, because he was indignant and defensive against the idiotic campaign from PETA. As he had all rights to be. How can I engage in serious discussion with someone whose hackles are raised? We should be seeking connection and understanding with those who are not yet attuned to the vegan message; not demeaning, shocking ad campaigns of dubious value which anger and confuse the average person ...
for this and many other reasons I do not support PETA ... and actively campaign against them. :(
Julien: WELL SAID. I used to support Peta but I stopped a long time ago when it was obvious how crazy they were getting and I began to feel embarrassed for them - and that's pretty sad when a lot of vegetarians and vegans have to start speaking out against an organization that should be fighting for the same cause!
PETA should understand that they aren't going to change the whole world, that it's impossible to change the beliefs of every single person. They need take different approaches to things and learn to take pride in their victories, no matter how small they may be, because changing one person is better than none at all. They might actually be able to help convert more people if they didn't act out as though they are going insane. When they fail, which they are bound to do a lot of the time, they make an even BIGGER deal out of it and take their activism a step further. They don't seem to know where to draw the line sometimes.
I thought breastmilk ice cream is pretty funny. I totally got it, and explained it to a friend (he's how I heard about this).
I think PETA did make an effort to reveal the connection:
"'The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk.'"
and also
"Update: In response to our letter, Ben and Jerry's issued the following statement: "We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child." Hey, guys, that's our point: Cow's milk is for baby cows.
"Storchen, a (very innovative) restaurant in Switzerland, has just announced that they will be unveiling a new menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent human breast milk. Some folks might think that drinking human breast milk is strange … but really, what's even stranger is that humans are the only species on the planet that drinks the milk of another species."
Just because that link isn't made obvious in the sources that aren't PETA doesn't mean PETA hasn't made it clear. Ultimately, I'm not always fond of their media grabbing tactics, but I definitely don't think this is the worst thing they've ever done. I'll take breast milk ice cream over sexualized circus animals any day.
Plus, isn't breast milk sweeter? It might make some good ice cream...
And some lactating women do try to use it in cooking out of curiosity. I'd try mine!
and hey, why would a non-profit realize they aren't going to change the world? that would take the wind out of the sails.
Considering that I'm too gullible for my own good, it took me a minute to get past the initial shock before I could form a real opinion and stand up against the omnivores in my family.
