Paula Deen doesn't do vegan - big surprise

So PD has come up on a lot of threads, and one of my suggestions was that we should write and ask her to do vegan recipes.

Well, big surprise, this is the reply I received:

Dear ,

Unfortunately I am not familiar with any recipes that would be suitable for
vegans. I would check out foodnetwork.com for ingredients you do eat for
some ideas!

Warm regards,
Paula Deen Enterprises

SHOCKING.
As far as a "chef" goes, they should be able to accommodate any order, wouldn't one think?
Or, couldn't the bitch at least TRY her own advice and research and have a show?

Drats.

Okay, here's my proposal..... I'll even be in charge of it! Let's send a "challenge" to the Food Network to have a "themed" week for "alternative diets"!!! Among the suggestions, we can include Wheat Free, Vegan, Egg Free, etc.... I have a feeling that if we get enough "signatures" or personal requests for such shows, we will show them that "healthy omnis" aren't the only ones who watch their shows! Isn't there a "National Health" week/month that they could tie that into??? BP, put this into another thread if you think it is more appropriate. This just seemed like the best place to introduce the idea for now.

YES!!  It also turns out that the American Dietetic Association has its nutrition month this coming March.  Now, a week of "alternative diets" may be a bit of a push, but having a day dedicated to vegan cooking, at least all of the prime time shows maybe featuring some vegan chefs is not unreasonable.

The reason why I suggested a week, is so that personalities who only have a show on "such and such day" can't get out of being included in the challenge of "going outside the box". That's also why I thought suggesting other diets that may not be vegan, but still require recognition would help round out the week. (It also make vegan look like a piece of cake when you throw in a challenge to make a weeks worth of meals soy free, etc!)

in all fairness, though...PD isnt a "chef", she's really just a homely cook. a SOUTHERN cook.

i believe it was Bobby Flay who said it is the measure of a great chef to be able to cook vegan. even though he grills alot of meat shit, i have seen him do quite a bit of good veggie things...i think for the most part, when it comes to chefs...if they cook w/ more whole, fresh foods, and rely less on dairy and fat (ie. paula deen and even rachael ray and her f'ing cheese on top of everything)...i think it really shows their talents. those are the people with real talent, imo.

Did Bobby Flay say that?  Whoa.  :o  He is not my favorite food network chef, but I think he just moved up a notch in my book.
You're so right, lucidanne, about chefs showing their true talents in this way.

It is really ridiculous that they don't have anything catering to vegan/alternative diets on the Food Network.  Especially when people who follow such diets probably cook for themselves more often than most, I suspect.

hanashi, do you know where would be the best place to contact them to suggest that, or could you write and ask them? then we could go out like good little veganelicals and post it on all the vegan boards asking people to do it.

Sweet.  Bobby Flay just confirmed my speculation.  Thanks, LA...

I got it.  How about if everybody sends PD an email, that way she knows that there is a larger vegan population out there then she realizes.

It wouldn't even have to be advertised as veg*n cooking show, just as whole food healthy cooking.  Some of my aquaintances think that my being vegan is really crazy, but they all like my food because "even though it's healthy, it still tastes good."  There's a value in simply teaching people how to steam vegetables or prepare raw food.  Like a health nutrition show, that shows you meals that are healthy and help you get a bunch of nutrients.

Hespedal... when you're done biking and building, there's a show you need to host.

Good point, HH!  Yeah, people tend to flinch at the word "vegan," but I'm sure lots of people would be amenable to the idea of "whole foods."  There already is a healthy cooking show on Food Network hosted by this nutritionist, Ellie Krueger (sp?) but she always uses lean meat and dairy.  :(

And as far as PD goes, when she was on Oprah a while back, and Oprah asked her about the ungodly amount of fat she uses in her cooking, she said, "I'm yer cook, not yer docter!"  I think it's a losing battle on the Paula Deen front.

Okay, so I'm gonna start a thread titled "Veggies take over Food Network" for this idea.... BUT I just thought I'd say they have a tab on their web site titled "Healthy Living" with a link to a vegetarian page.... http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/lf_hl_vegetarian/0,2661,FOOD_21216,00.html I guess they think 10 recipes should appease us! ???

YOU KNOW (whoa why are caps on  ;D) i was watching something on there today (healthy new years with the stars?) and it was all the chefs on there doing little "snips" with a healthy recipe. PD almost went vegan... she used some honey, but other than that (easy to sub!) it was vegan.

i love how she's like "i don't know what a vegan is"  ;D seriously, how can you be a chef and not know some of the more major dietary preferences?

OMG I watched this too BP...Although she really didnt look like she was enjoying it...She was like oooo, ummm, sooo...yummmy...all that fruit...I was just waiting for her to slab on some butter...
