I can't believe it! - Plastic Bag Pollution

My mom sent me something about saving the environment!  I am usually the one sending her stuff like that!  So I am going to post it, though I am preaching to the chore here, pretty much everybody here is already very environmentally friendly.  It is a slide show about the dangers of plastic bags, it is a really good slides show.  I already use cloth bags, ones I bought from Kroger and have been now for awhile.  But if you could send this message around to others who may not know how bad plastic bags are maybe we can get more people to use re-usable cloth bags.

Actually, I was just telling MDVegan last night that I need to put "get reusable cloth bags" on my list of "things to help clean up my life". I'll be investing in those soon!

Check out Reusable Bags.  It will give you an idea of the types of bags out there.  I use Chico Bags.  They have an internal stuff sack and clips, so you can hook a bunch together on your cart or basket.

That was a great slideshow.Thank`s for sharing it.  I have the full collection of Traider Joes bags and use them everywhere. I walk through the mall with my own bags and stuff like that. The sad thing is that people think it is strange. I think it is important!

Our local grocery store sells reusable bags for 99 cents each and I have been buying one or two every time I go to the grocery, so by now I have alot of them, I use all the time.  The other day I had a huge  cart of groceries and about 9 or 10 of my bags getting filled and a middle aged man walked right up to me out of nowhere and said that I had inspired him to use re-usable bags and thanked me for caring about the environment.  He then asked the teller where he could get the bags and left his place in line to go get some.  I even keep my plastic produce bags and bread bags and use them over and over.  I keep them in my car, so they are always handy.

I really enjoyed that, thanks so much for posting that. I too am an advocate of reusable shopping bags.

Hopefully people will be inspired by videos like this and the positive acts that other people are participating in.

We have the go green ones and have been using them for five years! The movies that Ed Norton narrated, "Strange Days on Planet Earth" have a really motivational segment on them as well. There is a thread with the links in news and debate.

The supermarket where my sister works (Price Chopper) now gives people a discount for brining their bags.  I am glad to see more and more people using them!  The trick is to remember to bring them with you, though.  I'm getting better at that.

It kind of kills me, though, that people are buying designer reusable bags.  I bet most people have either a canvas bag, or a knapsack, or loads of other bags around their house (beach bags....) that they could use instead of buying new ones if they thought about it.  It seems silly to buy new bags.  But if it keeps people from using the plastic, then whatever.  My mom bought some reusables and practically never uses them.  So I took them to school with me.  Hehe.  Now she is getting better about it, though.

Thanks so much for the link.  I sent it to many and they have responded they will send it to many.
Our stores in Ontario are all pretty much selling reusable bags now.  Although as KMK said we probably all have reusable bags at home, some of mine are pretty nasty.  Have carried all sort of doggy things. :-) No, not poop! I agree, none of us need designer reusable bags.
Nearly all the stores here are selling them for 99 cents.  The LCBO (Liquor Control Board Ontario) has now banned plastic and is using paper.  They sell both a cloth bag and a vinyl bag (both reusable) that holds 4 or 6 bottles. Under $4.00.
One of our grocery store chain's bags have a picture of a vegetable on it.  Kind of a peaceful message.  I see more and more people using them.  Although I thought it was maybe more of a women thing (not trying to be sexist), I am seeing more and more men using them.  Warms my heart.
My biggest problem is remembering to bring them to the store.  So, I have decided when I use them and unload groceries, I will immediately take them out to my car.
One of the hugest chain stores in Canada, Canadian Tire is now selling them as well for 99 cents.
I always collected plastic bags for doggy walks but no more.  Tonight on eBay, I ordered 360 biodegradable doggy bags.  The added bonus is they are the size to pick up a poop which is way smaller than a grocery store bag.
We can all make a huge difference. Everyone, send the link to all your email friends.
