honey
ok, i know that honey is definitely not considered vegan, but does it really bother you to eat it that much? I'm not trying to convince everyone to go out and buy one of those little bear bottles of honey and eat the whole thing, but, bees are just insects. i guess i can feel a lot more sympathy toward cows and pigs and stuff, but when it comes to bugs...well...
maybe i just don't know enough about honey and how it is made, but even if i did i don't think i could have much sympathy for bugs. i mean, yeast is technically a little animal, too, and i eat my bread and my nutritional yeast every day with no guilt. i tell people that i am a vegan because it is the easiest way to get across that i do not eat meat or eggs or milk, but occasionally, i don't mind eating something with honey in it, either. am i totally wrong? ???
I'm actually on a pair of Saucony running shoes right now: Aura LX. Unless the rubber in the soles is non-vegan, they're ok. Everything else is synthetic and nylon materials. I hesitate to post this because I'm just positive someone's going to inform me of yet another twisted way that people put animals in our everyday products. I really like my Sauconys. NB used to be my favorite, but these are more comfy. So I hope I can still buy them with a good conscience!
Ooh, yay, I just found this! http://www.peta.org/living/alt4.asp
I have never liked honey although I am sure some things I eat have honey in them. I am not vegan tough. If I was vegan, I guess honey would be on my list of wouldn't want to eat it.
Last night I was on the phone with my friend and I said hang on, there is a big bug walking across my floor. It was a bumble bee. I quickly got a glass, slid paper under it and took him or her outside and let it go.
As for my indoor spiders, they are my indoor spiders. I live with Charlotte and Charlie. I never kill them. Have let them out in the summer but usually don't bother. They have lived with me for too long to turf them out although, I have to suspect I am now living with the offspring or Charlotte and Charlie are about 19 years old!!!! ;D ;D ;D
On a funny note, years ago, I caught one of them and let it out on my balcony. It was so cold I started feeling really bad. So I went out, found him or her and brought him or her back inside!
I presume it is Charlotte who lives in my bathroom because there is a big mirror so she can primp. Charlie lives downstairs and is watch dog over the other bugs that get in.
For some reason, Charlotte and Charlie have lived through my recent and on going renovations. The paint, the cleaning products etc. My cats also seem to ignore them although they are smart as whips (Charlotte and Charlie) and always show up. Maybe in reality I have hundreds of spiders but I think not. Just Charlotte and Charlie.
Apstaats & Humbolt Honey--Thanks for the tips on vegan running shoes! I've had a preference for Sauconys for a long time, but I'm betting that they don't have any animal-free shoes at all. I don't know why I think maybe Montrails might be animal free, but I may be wrong about that--just thought I read it somewhere. When I get all of my research done, I'll post the info and share it.
I wear New Balance running shoes, but I use Timberland running/hiking shoes on the trails around here. There's a Timberland store at a local outlet mall pretty close by and I was surprised to find leather free/vegan running and trail shoes. Here are a few....you can look for the "girlie" versions (unless you have very large feet). ;) :

They also have an Adidas store there, and I have found non leather running shoes there from time to time as well.

Humbolt-Honey, I'll add Salomon to my list of shoes to research--thanks!
Apsaats, thanks for tip on the Aura LX--it's good to know Saucony has some animal-free shoes!
Dave, I checked Timberland's store locator, and there isn't one here in Washington. Though, there is a factory outlet shoe store (Factory Brand Shoes, I think it's called) nearby, and I believe they sell Timberlands--I'll check it out. I've owned Timberland hiking boots before and really liked them. There's an Adidas factory outlet there, too. I checked out the women's version of the Vaporate Low Blue. I quite like them. The picture shows a side view of the shoe, but it looks like it has really good tread, which is what I need. I need good grip, and I wear down the tread really fast on my shoes. I also need it to be somewhat wide at the heal for stability, because I can be pretty clumsy on narrow, rocky trails. I've tripped one too many times--it's kind of funny when I do though--even when it hurts I laugh ::). Thanks for the info--you've been really helpful!
What was this thread about again? Oh....right! HONEY. Oops. I'm incorrigible.

I've participated in many a thread that got WAY off topic lately. That's why I like it here though. My brain operates in the same way.
OMG this is sooooooooo off topic BUT...
My husband wear New Balence running shoes also we find the wear out a tad more quickly than whatever brand he used last (which I don't remember what that was and am not sure of it's vegan-ness)
Shaolinbunny,
I'm so embarassed that you're referring to my rant in that other thread on "transitioning" I haven't even gone back to read any replies... I thought it was mean after i wrote it and i actually dreamt about deleting it!
Back to HONEY though.... bee research still not done.... but STILL on the list. I swear!

No need to feel that way. You made a lot of valid points. I appreciated it. :)

I have been told that Sketchers are vegan - so that's what I wear - they do say all man-made materials (I don't know about glues, etc being vegan in any shoe)
An added plus- kids think I'm cooler for wearing them ; )
I don't run, so I cannot attest to how good they are for actual runners, but they are a "running shoe"
