Hello and Ni hao from China :)
Hello I'm Kara, I originally reign from the states (Seattle, WA) but I moved to China a few years back to finish my studies in Chinese. Now I'm working in a restaurant managing a lot of different styles of food, though it's not always easy since a lot of western ingredients are really expensive... Or, impossible to find. Not to mention, some Chinese aren't familiar (or very wild about) some western foods, so it can be a headache organizing a functional menu.
My fiance is from Dongbei, and to put it simply, when I went to visit his family I was the first person that they had ever heard of that didn't eat meat or dairy, wear leather, etc - it's unheard of. somehow he's put up with it and now he doesn't even notice that the meals i cook are all veggie friendly - not a single complaint!
admittedly it is extremely difficult at first trying to do a vegan diet in China - and the thoughts of buying vegan such-and-such (butter, cheese, etc) would be luxurious! alas I don't have such conveniences which has resulted in some very strange substitutes and easy-to-find ingredient recipes.
I love to meet people and talk about my experiences here - cooking obviously is a huge part of my life as well as Asia, so together I have a gathered a wealth and appreciation of great recipes inspired from Laos, Thailand, and of course, both northern and southern China.
thanks for being sweet and hooking me up with some really creative ideas in your recipes,
Very much looking forward to meeting you guys !
Ni hao Kara!
Welcome to the forums!
It sounds like a struggle to be a vegan in china. I had no idea. ??? It's strange, I just always thought asia would be more vegan friendly. I learn something new everyday. lol
It depends actually ! In Beijing it's easy to buy all kinds of imported foods from foreign markets - so I can get ahold of canned lentils, gorbanzo beans, nice olive oils- etc. But these markets will definitely never carry gourmet foreign foods. Otherwise, Beijing is half and half. I'll go to restaurants and ask if a dish has meat and they'll assure me it doesn't, but they don't consider the tendon or bone to be meat - gotta be specific ! However there are street foods here like grilled tofu skin and all sorts of spicy yummy veggies, sweetened popcorn, and the roasted yams, all so amazing !!
welcome :) well you have access to tons of tofu right? hopefully you love tofu as much as i do as it is so versatile... i would just start browsing the recipes here, i'm sure you will find plenty to keep you satisfied
Welcome! :)
Hello and welcome! Have you considered buying some stuff online that you can't find there?
Welcome! Nice to know you're beating the odds and living a vegan life.
Ni hao brouillette!
First off, what an awesome thing to be doing. I am very jealous! The street foods sound especially amazing!!
It sounds like lots of at home cooking is what you're up to... I guess that makes VegWeb the perfect companion! We even have recipes for making things like vegan mayo and other goodies you might not be able to find where you are. I second Minke, too. Can you buy anything online? Maybe if you buy in bulk, you can save a bit of money??
So much good luck on your adventures and if you're ever having a hard time with the veg part of it, head to our forums, we'll be here to support you!
Best,
Laura
welcome!!
Hey thanks for the advice! Oddly enough ive never thought about ordering things on line, but if it were to be expensive i have a very motivated cooking soul to figure out how to make vegan mayo, cheese, sour cream, etc. seems kind of like a mission to know this stuff anyway ;)
and amymylove, i definitely love tofu, its about 25 cents for a big hunk of it here so im always making and trying new things. my boyfriends mom just mashes up a hunk of tofu, adds cucumbers and green onions, salt - man its so simple but addictive!
Geeze I am so jealous of your cheap tofu! You can definitely make vegan mayo and sour cream out of tofu so you should try it! Good luck :)
