what do you make of this advert for vegtalk (and what is says about veganism)?

http://www.vegtalk.org/promotion/slim_erotic_legs.jpg

I came across this recently, and I've slammed it for a few reasons, but I was wondering what peoples first reactions are on other veggie/vegan based chat forums.

I think its sending very stupid, wrong and dangerous messages, I'll post back after a few replies (or if I don't, pm me and it should go into one of my email addresses and I'll get back to it).

other than airbrushing, i think that picture was edited. The woman's (girl's?) thigh isn't really the right shape to begin with  and almost looks drawn.

i guess that brings up the issue of not only portraying thin/underweight as beautiful (and a product of veganism), but artistic representations of of thinness that don't reflect reality.

They're claiming to know the girl etc. which is interesting, and the users are more interested in general in straw-manning my arguments than addressing the points.

For those of you who want to call the picture "stupid", liberation is often a matter of attitude more than aptitude.
If liberation can be brought to women, liberation can also be brought to animals. Sexual liberation does not have to mean such things as group sex, or public lesbian displays, etc. but can serve as a potent metaphor for liberation in general. The picture expresses liberation, or, one of the ways of liberation of women. If liberation for women can happen/increase, the possibilty of more liberation for animals is more hopeful.
(Due to some possible cumputer glitch or something, I may have to post this message hastily in order to re-read/edit it.)

Therefore this picture, as the song goes, "has legs and knows how to use them" - for one, for further kicking ass on repression and abuse, etc., - for two, drawing attention to the site ( which I assume is pro-compassion) through the use, and perhaps exploitation, of what many people also have in such a repressed country, a true "eating disorder" and true hunger, for sex.

What frustrates me is the way veg*nism is being portrayed as a quick fix miracle diet. there are many other cool ways to gather people to a site than an ad that absolutely makes no sense except for being a fad diet. It does reak of PETA, stupid and pointless and unrelated to VEGANISM.  why not put an ad of an professional athlete and promote veg*nism that way? since many out there believe us to be frail and weak unhealthy people, wouldn't hurt to dissolve that myth rather than to encourage it.

I wonder, if early in their careers, if legendary people such as Marylyn Monroe, or Cher, or Madonna, etc. made many friends in the female sector, yet today in a more enlightened society (in some ways), not only how many friends, but how many admirers do they have becuase they dared to stand out from the culturally programmed crowd  and have the ability to use their sexuality to express liberation(!) Compare the 1940s, when many "moral" women with breast cancer would prefer to die than to show their breasts to a doctor - to today or modern times when women have become more open and accepting,... and natural. Has anybody here bothered to write a thank-you letter to their true leaders of liberation?

Is it just me or does this comment absolutely make no sense in relevance to the topic at hand? comparing breast cancer and iconic actresses/singers (whom weren't hated in their time) to a poorly thought out ad that has been repetitive by other organizations for many different things?  in this case they didn't dare to be different, they just attempted to be lazy and uninventive.

regarding athletes as a means to promote veganism,
http://www.organicathlete.org/?proactivists
and this guy
http://www.organicathlete.org/?Kenneth_Williams
i met him at an animal rights conference some years ago. he was so positive, nice, and informative, plus the athlete thing makes him a pretty good ad for veganism.
i don't have lofty athletic goals, but i'm more motivated to eat healthier/differently when the role model is clearly a healthy individual, rather than just a thin woman.

In other words, you like staring at disembodied women's legs. Okay, fine.  ::)

This is good stuff! and semi inspires me to get my lard rear in gear :) this is what should really be out there, b/c when it comes to sex, the 12 year old boys that are looking at the pics don't care if the girl in the pic eats broccoli or feces  ;D

I think there's some confusion, there's a difference between showing incredibly skinny legs, and saying that that's linked to veganism. If someone wants to put up a picture of their legs that's one thing, but to encourage others to have those legs is another, and to link that to veganism is yet another.

Excellent summaries, nothing to add... except...

That is totally a dude. Look again... anyone have fella-friends who enjoy the occasional drag nite? um, yeah, these are lovely legs... but they aren't ladies' legs!... not that it matters vis-a-vis veganism-- just definitely doesn't make me feel objectified as a woman: it's a dude.

One good thing I got from that pic. I decided to google the imageholder's website to see what they are about. And found http://veganclub.com, a listing of vegan blogs that have some rockin' recipes! One is for "pizza hummus" which I am so gonna adapt to my own use!

This is the kind of crap that makes my family think I have an eating disorder.

Oh God, I'm sorry, that's one of the stupidest, but fairly common myths about.

It's okay. It's an upsetting thing to deal with, but not intolerable. My family isn't big on acceptance; I've grown to expect it.

When my father first presented his little theory to me, I told him it was the stupidest thing I'd ever heard, and my veganism was all about the animals. He said that the mind can fool itself into strange things. So apparently I just THINK I have ethical values which affect my diet, and I really just wanna be thin.  ???

Yah, jeez, how are *you* gonna know what you're actually thinking?!! Good thing he was around, you know, to clue you in. (eye roll!!)

It's not just veganism. Actually ALL things we do are secretly done out of a desire to be thin. It is, quite literally, the only reason that anyone ever has done or will do anything!

If you ever want to get married, go to school, volunteer for a charity, have a child, win the lottery, start a war, end world hunger--just pause, take a deep breath...remember that what you really want is to be thin.

Remember it only if my parents tell me that that's what I think, you mean.

If I think it's about being thin I'm probably fooling myself. I can't trust my own mind!  ;D
